للنقص من أعمارنا ما يَكملُ
والدهرand time يؤيسُناmakes us despair ونحنwhile we نؤمِّلُhope
والدهر يؤيسُنا ونحن نؤمِّلُ
What fills out our lifespans serves to shorten them;
To the shortcomings of our lives there is what completes
and time makes us despair while we keep hoping.
And time makes us despair while we are hopeful

أبدا فتُدركنا ونحنُ نهرولُ
Death walks at its leisure to beguile us
Death walks slowly to deceive us
always, then overtakes us while we hurry.
Forever, so it overtakes us while we are rushing

Your stay in death seems even longer

Turn away from both sides of your world and flee;
Turn away from the worthless world and flee
the covetous man has perished, and the trusting man has not escaped.
The greedy perishes while the reliant survives

the paths of righteousness vanished and every way grew obscure?

He who, amid heedlessness, taught himself
Whoever was heedless, let him make himself aware
that death is a pursuer who never grows heedless.
That death seeks and does not neglect

I weep for you for the good deeds—you died, and they were divorced—
I weep for you for the good deeds when you were released
and for the wayfarer: you lie at rest, and he is left to wander.
And you hosted the wayfarer, so you are laden

my fortitude, though I display it, is feigned.
My patience, though I pretend to have it, is little

You have left this dwelling lonely, its hills worn away;
You have made this dilapidated house desolate
did that dwelling, then, gain companionship?
Did the companion get comfort in that house?

Alas! He is deaf, so no eloquent speaker

Can convey a word to him, nor a messenger deliver

whoever is fortunate begets a son like you.
That one who was fortunate, the like of you comes forth

If a giver could drive death back with generosity,
If a generous one could ransom death with his wealth
what you give would have saved your father from doom.
He would have saved your father from calamity with all he spends

But it is the inescapable, insoluble disease

A world that delights with things whose like it uses to harm:
A world that is pleased by what harms the likes of him
so honey is its name, and colocynth its meaning.
It has a name that is sweet but a meaning that is bitter

Be patient! Among the marvels of calamities is that
Have patience, and of the wonders of afflictions is that
amid them, Yadhbul is taught how to endure.
Through them one sees how to have patience while withering

would surely find his death light and easy.
His death became easy on him and smooth

How many deaths are better than a life?

Sorrow cannot snatch a delight from you

your father beneath the soil is dead, yet fortunate.
Your father under the earth is dead and well
