They said, 'You are content.' I said, 'What good has anger done?'
They said you're satisfied, I said what's the use of rage
Time has never contended with a young man without defeating him.
No one ever defeated fate except by accepting it

When you know how beautifully I sought my goal

If I strive, its outcome does not weary me
what was not due, so long as I have discharged what was due.
What is not destined will not happen, and what is destined must

A complainer blames me for leanness
thinking that what fattened him came from what he earned.
Thinking what fattened him I acquired

By my time, nothing made me whiter
if only the shorn were spared the shaggy one's reproach!
If the blamed one is safe from the flaws of manners

Stay away from carrying burdens, and come blaming
a smooth-skinned one who never bucked at the pack-saddle's bites.
I am smooth, bites of adversity do not stick to me

its skin turns milkless, with no milk to draw.
Its skin returns cracked without milk

An advice, if you accept it, beware those you trust
beware of those you trust, and forsake those you love.
And leave those you love

So windows of propriety remain
