    O my two companions, turn aside with me awhile

    to the ruins, and ask their hills:

    تبدَّلت من بَعدنا سُعداها

    who dwelt there one day after us, and whom

    their Suʿdā chose in our stead;

    وارتشَفَ الأشنبَ مِن لمَاها

    and who partook of the cup of her saliva

    and sipped the cool sweetness from her dusky lips;

    and who grazed the meadow along the protected pasture's edges

    and hunted down the fleeing one among its gazelles?

    O tree of the valley, may a raincloud water you,

    so you laugh before the great trees do, because it weeps.

    And O little tamarisks of al-Naqīb, leaves have sprouted

    on the boughs from your quarter—who has plucked them?

    And O little clearings of al-Qalīb, from the sandy bend

    of Naʿmān, then al-Athīl amid its sandy flats:

    indeed, today I am lovesick and enamored of you all,

    possessed of burning longing whose anguish never ends.

    إلا وتجفو مقلتي كراها

    Never has my soul recalled the days of the protected pasture

    without my eye forsaking its slumber;

    nor have I breathed the east wind from your land

    without the sweetness of its fragrance healing me.
