O my chosen friend from Khuzaymah,

are you trustworthy if entrusted with my secret?

And if entrusted, will you convey on my behalf

a message of reproach my breast cannot contain?

I adjure you by the disheveled throngs surging from Mina,

intermingled, as you have heard of the Night of Decree,

and by the kissed Black Stone, against which they pressed

their sides, and by the two sacred stations and al-Hijr:

Have I heard from you—or might you have heard—

anything stranger than your people's verses concerning me?

Wealth is raided in every encampment,

and the young men of Awf have raided my poetry.

Plundered treasures of mine lie among their baggage,

crying out their dashed hopes from captivity's shackles.

Pieces tossed among riders, who divide them,

passed from mouth to mouth, from city to city.

The camel-driver sings them, and their drinking companions are serenaded

with them by the tuneful singer; the eulogist offers praise with them.

Noble maidens whom I freely gave as gifts

to every youth who failed to honor my bond of kinship through marriage.

They eagerly sought her hand and set down in writing

for her precious offerings of bounty and riches.

Yet to other men, kings besides themselves, she was

aloft beside Orion or the Eagle's neck,

shielded from being seized by a ruse

and lightning's promise, or from being driven away by force.

But when she came to be led along in their ropes,

they urged one another to treachery and betrayal against her.

As though, in taking her, they had driven off a careless owner's grazing herd,

which herdsmen had chased away between Babylon and al-Aqr.

So turn aside to them, then say to Mufarrij:

Do you desire my praise yet spurn my gratitude?

Are you content that I waste away while your hand is fertile,

lush with grass, yet at your hands I go hungry despite the slaughter,

and that my hopes in you and my quest grow dark,

while your face beneath its veil is brother to the full moon?

Reports have spread that you are the best among them

in hospitality, when the guest weeps from the bite of bitter cold,

the readiest to slaughter mature camels when the year is ash-gray,

and mark the widest span for the cooking pot's hearthstone.

You are generous, giving in prosperity as prosperity allows,

and mend the poor man's broken fortunes even in poverty.

What, then, of a freeborn virgin sent

to you by the rhymes, matron and maiden alike?

You fell in love with her, then in weariness turned

your face, concerning her, away from rewarding and mentioning me.

    فهل تستحلّون النكاح بلا مَهرِ

    And you gave her a dower, then took her dower back;

do you consider marriage lawful without a dower?

Where, then, is Mazyadi generosity, and what was built

and left by your father of eminence and glory?

And what you have never ceased spending on greatness,

giving of wealth and abundant livestock?

I would shield you from having it said of you:

The whole clan's generosity lay with him in the grave.

Far be it from you that my wares should lose their value

in your hands, while wares grow in value for merchants.

My untamed verses about you have filled the throng,

and traveled as chants for pale camels, or morsels for travelers.

I have concerning you what will grieve your foes,

and preserve for you what delights you to the end of time.

If you acquire them through kindness, they will build for you

fortresses over your ancestral honors, of the choicest treasure.

But if you seize them by force, they will pass the evening in another clan,

complaining under duress, or speaking with justification.

O star of Awf, O Mufarrij, reliever of its distress,

is it not time for procrastination to blush at my patience?

    I kept demands for payment away from you, granting you respite;

I granted you time in hardship; so repay in prosperity.

And say, my messenger, conveying this to their envoys,

all of them, singling out al-Abdari, Abu Nasr:

Is it right that I let loose between myself and you

the horses of hope, and then you hold back from helping me?

And you lured me on, until, once I entered it,

you withdrew from me, though punishment falls on the instigator.

Do you not remember the pledge that stood between us?

Yes, you feign forgetfulness while remembering it.

You sleep heedless of my due and disregard my praise,

though it was you who loaded that burden on my back.

Then rise, Abu Nasr, as a freeborn woman's son should rise,

to aid a freeborn friend whom you yourself brought low.

And send my messenger back carrying the payment in full,

and win my praise, for it is loftier than wealth.

And tell the emir, son of the emir, in counsel:

Await my good, and beware the harm of my evil.
