No rest for the throbbings of a heart stirred

at al-Bān by remembrance of Khansāʾ.

After it had once desisted, there returned to it

a way of love and stubborn resolve.

    مَنْ لقتيلٍ ما له ثارُ

    My people, within my own family I have a killer;

who will avenge one slain who has no avenger?

yet her murderous glance is a brigand.

I weakened beneath the wink of a speechless one

that fells my reason, though itself feeble.

Khansāʾ—or if her dwelling lies far off.

They frighten me with the Fire for union with her—

my people—yet in separation from her is the Fire.
