My brother in affection is my brother by kinship.

And my close friend, before every other love, is my beloved.

And my faraway patron, who speaks well of me,

is nearer to me than my patron close at hand.

And he who praises me openly in my presence

is a ransom for the one who hints at praise in my absence.

So do not seek out the errors of my longing,

for I have always been unerring in my longing.

You wanted me to be ruled through hypocrisy

by one with a blameless face but a suspect back,

and by tongues that support me, seemingly sound,

though I know them to be inner linings for faults.

Time has apologized through a friend's affection,

which erased the sins it had committed before.

There came to me—blessed be its coming—unbidden,

with no claim upon him and no obligation,

a hand from him, matching the hand of the raincloud—

unerring, pouring upon the lean year.

So imagination pictured him for me, with a heart

that sees by conjecture through the gaps of the unseen.

Abu Hasan, you began it; now complete it,

even if you give me only my share.

Your qualities, as they unveil my verse,

are the smith's right hand, honing a blade.

We are thirsty, and with you there is a well,

and you are the drawing-rope of that well.

    Abu al-Abbas is our refuge, and so is Sa'd;

so speak of the mountain, or speak of the dune.

I have chosen you there as my reserve, to unfold

what is sound in its folds, or to unfold what is flawed.

And anyone but you is one I have turned to unwillingly,

as the cheek's whiskers submit to gray hair.

Whenever you are at peace with me, my rock remains unharmed,

despite whatever sins of mine some people have insinuated.

If the beloved looks with an eye of kindness,

then the watcher's eye is the most insignificant gaze.
