May the rain never pass you by, O abode of union—

Every downpour, its ties loosened, its spouts unbound,

Abundant; every tract of noonday earth

Beneath it smiles, revealing the coolness of shade,

    Awakening your soil without harm,

Making your breeze languid without sickness—

For the sake of nights gone by in our life.

Ah, how I yearn for those nights!

When Time's hand was a right hand, and youth

    Ranged far, and Time's neck wore jewels;

And the tribe's maidservants—since color had suffused

    Their land—had white necks and green sandals;

And my youth, in matters of love, was subject to no

    Sovereign's command or governor's chastisement;

And the fair women gave leave to my lips

And my hand, held by halters in my snares.

Every slender maiden wore my right hand as her necklace

In night's blackness, and my left as her earrings.

There I plucked love's sweet basil,

Tender, between a branch and a crescent moon:

An embrace that distracts from sleep, leading to

A kiss that makes one forget sweet, limpid water.

Resistant to your mingling harshness with moderation.

In her sitting posture or a turn toward you,

She is a dune's daughter, surmounted by a gazelle's mother.

The mark of slavery on Beauty's neck.

A moment of Time's heedlessness lay beneath a veil

Of black hair, let down and trailing.

I found no condition of my days objectionable

Before gray hair's tyranny altered my condition.

Night became moonlit; they said, 'Right guidance!'

I said, 'How I long for that waywardness!'

A judge who exchanges truth for absurdity.

And the father of colors preserves

No hue in us, nor conformity to a pattern.

It gathers a company, it is for rupture and parting.

Senselessly—what do you want with me, O Time?

A plain-sheathed blade—while an adorned one may falter.

However you circle me, you are driven away from me

By a guardian and patron among them, with both his hands.

By Time's reversals, nor their resolve to repair my ruin.

Disown their habit of patience and endurance.

Heavy loads that would lame full-grown camels.

In his side, surpassed a mighty, full-grown camel.

    Resolves enamored of noble pursuits,

    And fingertips fragrant with bounty;

By a lap, through deeds, in generosity's race.

Yet for it, in that year of drought, he paid dearly.

As a faithful father, and bestowed gifts on a mother of dependents.

    لم أجدْ أختاً يميناً لشمالي

    I could find no sister right hand for my left;

And you whose shelter had been my hiding place

From Time's raiders—my backing and my refuge:

    Announcing that honor's shade, from

Above you, will spread wide after its decline,

And that Time is a repentant slave,

Come seeking from you the pardon of his masters.
