May God heal a soul that will not abase itself for any pursuit,
May Allah heal a soul that does not humiliate itself for what it desires,
and a patience at which Time marvels whenever it hears of it;
And patience, when fate hears of it, it is amazed,

And a chest, when other spacious chests are constrained
at calamity, greets it with “Welcome, welcome!”
By events that it faces with family and a welcome,

far from thoughts so long as they bring abasement,
Far from notions that were lowly,
but if they concern acquiring noble virtues, they draw near.
For if you are in acquiring virtues, you are drawn near,

Accustom yourself, my lively lad, to my morals, if you wish to be
a companion, then be one who excuses me or rebukes me.
My friend, either excusing me or blaming me.

Rich, then be calm to the rich and ingratiate yourself.

For if you inspire neither hope nor fear among them,
For unless you hope or fear them
and sit in the middle rank, it will trample you, and you will perish.
And sit with the mediocre, you will be frustrated.

for it must be followed by the leap of one who succeeds.
That it must have a shocking result.

And, my companion—though abasement is a watering place for livelihood—
And O wakeful one, seeking sustenance is a resort
I withhold my soul from it, though my soul offers me freely.
I disdain my soul from it while it is generous with me.

Yes, there I stand; be pleased with me or be angry.
Yes I am steadfast, so turn away from me or be angry.

Shall I meet the miser with praise
in which my outward and hidden selves are adversaries?
In which my witness and hidden self are two opponents?

Then many would call me a liar even where I speak truth.
Many times when I am truthful I am called a liar.

I have made it my habit to praise one who does good,
I have been accustomed to praise the benefactor as a trait,
speaking of what is in him, and to blame one who does wrong.
I say what is in him and blame the sinner.

So standing with enemies for the truth has not delighted me,
I was not made happy by the truth that I am against the enemy,
nor has opposing my father over falsehood disgraced me.
Nor was it shameful that I am powerless against my father.

And a need of my soul whose outset prudence planned:
A needful soul, wisdom prepared its chest for it,
so I returned with it, praiseworthy in its outcome.
So I attained it, praised in the sequel.

The intention of the son of Hujr before it, or Jundab.

By a complete night whose stars
toward him they seek the East, traveling my way.
I enumerated, going to their rising place in the east.

My solitude has none of their gathered company,
I have no company, and they have no gathering,
but my heart has the same blazing as they do.
But in my heart is what is in them of kindling.

It sees the highland, but whenever the eye's assumption
whenever the eye's guess seeks its utmost height, it is belied.

eagle—with the eyes of one helpless and awestruck.
The eagle's eye, incapable and awe-struck.

I walked, so it led me, with a pure heart,
by the great ordeals I face, and a tried body,
To mighty things I did not attain, and a tried body.

The will of fortune tired me out, and whoever has
a need in the Sun's keeping must grow weary.
A need with the sun, grows tired.

May a coward be ransom for the peerless al-Kafi, his tongue
May the unique, All-Sufficient ransom me, his tongue is cowardly,
brave wherever speech is not well aimed.
Brave in speech, though not aimed.

A miser: were the sea between his fingers,
Miserly, if the sea were between his molars
and he parted them to release its drops, none would seep out.
And he parted it from its drops, it would not seep through.

He rashly seeks to rival him, with disordered judgment
He competes with him foolishly with an unkempt opinion,
that strains to no avail, and a splintered reputation.
He toils but does not excel, and a noble lineage.

And a man proclaiming his lineage on the day of boasting shows his face;
And a pretender, one who boasts openly
when al-Dabbi claims his lineage, he is told: “Veil yourself!”
When the youth claims lineage, he is told: “Be veiled!”

O night traveler, if you ride, do not make your camel kneel
O rider, either you rode so do not alight
to rest; and if you are on foot, then ride.
Comfortably, or you walked so mount.

Perhaps you will come to the path of generosity racing
and thus drink, despite the great press of the crowd.
Ahead with that crowd despite the jostling.

And say, O Abu Al-‘Abbas, rather O Abu Al-Wara’
for all of them, in what you own, are sons of one father.
For they are all, in what you possess, the sons of a father.

I am that man; one visit did not satisfy my longing;
It is I whom a visit did not quench my longing
rather, drawing near increased my grief in separation.
Rather, the distance increased my passion.

If you love a thing once you have seen it,
If you love something, either you see it
and wish to suffer, visit it, then keep away.
And wish to suffer, so visit then avoid.

I yearn when the delegates take leave,
with the yearning of the ʿUdhri youth who passed a herd of gazelles.
Like a young man whose beloved passed by Rabarb.

By God, I did not avoid you this year willingly
nor because a journey toward you was wearisome to me.
Nor was traveling towards you my intention.

Turning me in the two worlds to other than you.

If the camel-driver's song delights the camels, then I—
When camels are excited by singing, I
whenever song draws me toward you—am delighted by generosity.
Sing when traveling, and generosity excites me.

My soul is for you, that which her love is for
even if angered over a rightful due—has a thousand reasons.
Even if she is angry in a necessary duty.

I forsook the peoples for love of you; give me my due,
I avoided people for you in love, so be loyal to me
let my allegiance carry me to the bounty of your hands.
And stand by me to the usefulness of your hands’ friendship.

They gloated this year that you drew me away
though your way—and mine—is sound justice.
And your path is justice and uprightness, and that is my path.

If indeed they reproach me for standing alone, apart from them,
If they blame that I singled you out, excluding them
in praising you, bear witness that I will not appease them.
In praising you, then witness that I am not blaming.

But if their hands have turned foul toward me and reek,
If their hands’ evil corrupts for me and doubts,
then many a gift of yours is pure and fragrant.
Then plenty of good reward for you is pure.
