بعثتُI sent لقلبيto my heart الهمَّgrief يومthe day هويتُكمI fell in love with you
بعثتُ لقلبي الهمَّ يوم هويتُكم
وبايعتُand I bartered with عينيmy eye بالرقادin exchange for sleep دموعاtears
وبايعتُ عيني بالرقاد دموعا
I brought grief upon my heart the day I fell in love with you.
I sent my heart worries the day I fell for you
And bartered my eye's sleep for tears.
And I bid my eyes goodbye with tears
وكنتand I would have been عزيزاًdignified لوhad عصيتُI defied خلاعتيmy wantonness
وكنت عزيزاً لو عصيتُ خلاعتي
وبتُّand I spent the night لنصحto the counsel of العاذلاتthe reproachful women مطيعاobedient
وبتُّ لنصح العاذلات مطيعا
And I would have kept my dignity had I defied my wantonness,
And I would have been dear had I disobeyed my nature
And spent the night obeying the reproachful women's counsel.
And I turned obedient to the advice of female advisors
