I seek difficult fidelity through an easy request,

and seek love's generosity where stinginess grows.

I trust a betrayer of pledges and seek to collect

my dues from one whose promises procrastination has slain.

How long, when enduring your desertion costs my blood,

shall I help you, deserters, to kill me?

I have understood: my heart will not submit to hurt,

out of pride, nor will my eye sleep under humiliation.

Whenever the eye waters the dwellings, may

your dwellings remain drought-stricken through my eyelid's stinginess.

Shall I drive through the wasteland a body I make threadbare

and wear away, while my heart is lent out, idle?

And shall I offer sweetness, with bitterness between my ribs,

to a deaf woman among you who neither embitters nor sweetens?

And leave in Baghdad one who would not sell me

for money, nor find comfort in family without me?

You betrayed me; yet tears may dry, just as they flowed,

and restive longing cool after boiling.

And why [grieve?], when Fakhr al-Mulk's aid protects me?

I neither begrudge a soul like mine nor price it high.

He taught every heart dignity, and

his hands, by spreading bounty, branded every unmarked hand.

He judged, his judgment unfettered before the unseen,

and gave, so the rainclouds' thread is never broken.

His bounty surpassed the petitioners' words,

though my share of it walks at a leisurely pace.

I see a raincloud whose water has covered the earth

and spread everywhere, yet my dwelling is not wet.

And runners who would be adorned by touching my dust

arrived after me, yet were rewarded before me.

I mean only those among them whose growth is tall [reading uncertain],

and good; I do not refer to mere sprouting greens.

Shall there lengthen before me—far be such comparisons from you—

the strides of a foot that, even shod, could not match my sandal?

And shall I be cast aside, wasted, neither my tongue nor my hand

employed in extending or withdrawing, in binding or unbinding?

The obligations of your favors and your generous kindness

call for your taking my arm and bearing my burden.

For if you were to shake out your bags,

you would find it hard, for all your searching, to find my like.

So do not judge the secrets of things and their hidden depths

by a shabby exterior beneath contentment.

How many a sword cuts keenly despite its notches,

And choice verses: if poetry is beset by tainted

parentage, they go forth with their lineage proven.

If you see a star among them shining,

you attest, though it names no father, that it is my child.

I served near at hand, standing in attendance, speaking face to face

with them, and earlier from afar, through letters and messengers.

Yet I gained no favor from their excellence and their embracing

every subtle meaning or decisive utterance.

And can it ever help me, while my fortune sits idle,

if my ambition lifts me up or my foot hastens?

And when you bestowed bounty and turned

toward me, fastening my rope to your kindness,

I was barred from your bounty, its purity and lawful good,

by a man between me and you, foul of tongue and foul of deed.

When he chews on people's honor, his enemy

and his patron alike are fit to be eaten in his mouth.

Shall I reproach him? Far from it! I would wrong him then:

one who has seen no kindness heeds no rebuke.

    Hopes I had in you—he killed their vigor;

may those hopes never grant him absolution.

Nor—by Him who revived generosity through you, after

people neglected it and grew resigned to bereavement—

have I grieved for wealth whose sky missed me

and rained on another's land, in drizzle or downpour.

For despite time's biting and the burden it lays on me,

my patience's spear-shaft is stout; I am hardy beneath burdens.

I love bounty that comes nobly, bringing honor,

and loathe wealth led in humiliation's halter.

But people suppose that you withhold from me

    because you disdain my praise and doubt my merit;

and they judge that I am no fitting recipient—

since you cast my affairs aside—of favors, nor worthy of them.

Whoever remains obscure in the days of your reign,

in whose reign can he grow feathers and rise?

We bestowed praise on kings before you, but it was disowned

by counterfeit natures that no bestowed praise could make genuine.

We were their dynasties' ornaments; yet a neck shrank

beneath the necklace, accustomed to the rings of a shackle.

They never savored the taste of praise, nor saw

any difference between generosity and stinginess.

Nor did they grasp that they should [give lavishly?], while their delegations

strutted amid their gifts and bounty.

So, ruled by baseness, they treated us alike in withholding,

and included all, as you treated all alike in generosity and giving.

Lofty deeds whose radiance blinded their days:

they passed away and left them to your wide-eyed days.

You unfolded the legends of the noble, and they were witnessed—

    tales once doubted when retold.

You revived them through generosity, then put them to shame

with surpassing bounty: from your presence came their death.

Distinguish me and proclaim my worth: many a favor

has had both branches flourish for you, with no toil for you at the root.

May you endure, with no 'after' whose coming you await,

as, when kings are counted, you have no 'before.'

May a life with unbroken bonds count out your festivals,

its ties strung together in undivided fellowship,

for all time, while they chant the pilgrim call, circle, and loosen

the sacrificial camels' doubled tethers on the Day of Sacrifice,

and while they hasten to depart, calling out from Mina:

'May God preserve Fakhr al-Mulk for crops and offspring!'

May you be sustained by a cord whose strands never unravel,

and dwell in glory whose shade never shifts.
