ونشدتُهand I adjured it الحُرَمَthe sacred obligations الوكيدةَthe binding لوif only رعَىit honored them
I reproached my fate for its wrongdoing, if only it understood,
I blamed fate for the calamity, had it been aware
And adjured it by binding sacred obligations, if only it honored them.
And I appealed to it with the pacts of deceit, had it taken heed
وطلبتُand I sought منهfrom it بسلمهِin its peace وبحربهِand in its war
نَصْفاًfairness فأعياbut it baffled حاسراًbareheaded ومقنَّعاand helmeted
And I sought from it, in its peace and in its war,
And I asked of it with its peace and with its war
Fairness—but it baffled the bareheaded and the helmeted.
Half, but it wearied disappointed and veiled

Each day brings a stumble through its vicissitudes,
In every day a stumbling from its change
Not remedied by saying to it, 'Rise again!'
That cannot settle to be told: Patience!

Keep your affection from one who colors his hours
Keep your love safe from the fickleness of its hours
With excuses: he gives you nothing until he has withheld.
With excuses, it will not give you anything until it deprives

Had it not been for enduring misfortunes, delight
Infatuated with the most precious treasures.
In respites would not have been sought

You descended, weighing me down; enough! I
Your burdens descended heavily, I am
Was on the verge of limping even before bearing you.
On the verge of collapse from carrying your load

To anyone whom deaf ears distress: I
Whose hearing was marred, I am on the day of deafness
On ʿArūba—Friday—was distressed to hear.
Saddened to hear the news of Abu Bakr's passing
ونعىand announced the death of أباAbu بكرٍBakr إليَّto me صباحُهَاits morning
لسفاههِfor its folly لوif only كانit were يعلمit knew مَنwhom نعىit announced dead
And its morning announced Abu Bakr's death to me,
A day of joy for Islam before you
In its folly—if only it knew whose death it announced!
And after you sorrow and anguish
يومٌa day علىfor الإسلامIslam قبلَكbefore your passing فرحةٌa joy
ويكونand it becomes بعدكafter your passing حسرةًsorrow وتفجُّعاand lamentation
A day of joy for Islam before your passing
The proof of your status in the heights
Becomes, after you, sorrow and lamentation.
Is that their congregational prayers gathered for you
ومنand among الدليلthe proofs علىof مكانكyour place فيin العلاthe heights
أنthat كانwas جمعُthe congregation صلاتهof its prayer لكfor you مَجمعاa gathering
And one proof of your place in the heights
So it is as if the caller of the call to its ordinance
Was that its prayer's congregation became a gathering for you.
Guided them to you, and invited to your reward
فكأنماand as though داعيthe caller الأَذانthe call to prayer لفرضِهِfor its prescribed prayer
لكfor you ساقهمhe led them وإليكand to you تثويباًwith a renewed prayer-call دعَاhe called
As though the muezzin, summoning to its prescribed prayer,
And I doubted when they carried you without resistance
Had led them for you, and renewed his call to you.
With a hand they etched a grave for you in the soil
وشككتand I doubted إذwhen حملوكthey carried you غيرَnot مدافعٍresisting
بيدٍwith a hand فخطُّواthen they traced فيin الثرىthe dust لكfor you مضجَعاa resting place
And I wondered, when they carried you, offering no defense
Did they attack a man and redden his figure
With a hand, and traced a resting place for you in the dust:
Or demolish a fragment so it crumbled
أعَدَواdid they assail علىagainst رجُلٍa man فوارواthen they buried شخصَهhis body
أمor طوَّحواthey cast down بيلملمٍYalamlam فتضعضعاso it crumbled
Had they assailed a man and buried his body,
O you whom I entrusted honor above his forehead
Or cast down Yalamlam, so it crumbled?
Of the sediment of your honor, so it receded
ياO منyou whom عهدتُI had known العزَّglory فوقabove جبينِهِhis brow
منwho رابdisturbed عزكyour glory فاقتضىso demanded أنthat يرجعاit retreat
O you on whose brow I had known glory,
He who bridled your intrepid horse and led it
Who disturbed your glory and demanded that it retreat?
Despite the length it pulled the ropes and tore them
منwho زمّbridled مَخطمَكyour muzzle الأبيَّthe defiant فقادَهso led it
معdespite طولthe long duration ماof its having جذبَtugged الحبالَthe ropes فقطَّعاthen snapped them
Who bridled your defiant muzzle and led it,
And it longed for your whip, so it galloped
Though it had long tugged at the ropes and snapped them,
And called your cavalry, so it responded and followed
وحوىand charmed لرقيتهwith his incantation لجاجكyour obstinacy فارعوىso it relented
ودعاand called نفارَكyour skittishness فاستجابso it answered وأتبعاand followed
And charmed your obstinacy with his spell, so it relented,
And I see the group whose throats had been tight
And called your skittishness, which answered and followed?
Racing exuberantly and expansively
وأرىand I see معاشرَgroups of people كنتyou were ضيقَa constriction of حلوقِهمtheir throats
يتسابقونracing one another تفسُّحاًfor room وتوسعاand expansion
And I see groups whose throats you once constricted
You were not defeated, so how did I find them
Racing for room and space to spread.
Inflamed with that fever and weakened in that place
ماnot كنتَyou were مغلوباًdefeated فكيفso how أبحتهمdid you allow them
ذاكthat الحمىprotected domain وأضعتَand you abandoned ذاكthat الموضعاstation
You were never defeated; how did you give them
And they entered your den in safety and perhaps
That protected domain, and abandon that station?
They passed by it, difficult to access and prohibited
ولَجُواthey entered عرينَكyour lair آمنينsafe وربماand often
مرّواthey passed بهby it صعبَhard الولوجto enter ممنَّعاwell defended
They entered your lair secure, though often
They gathered but did not plug your place, even a little
They passed it when it was hard to enter and well defended.
And they expanded but were not patches for your tear
جَمَعواthey gathered فماbut not سدُّواthey filled مكانَكin your place ثُلمةًa breach
وسَعَواand they strove فماbut not كانواthey were لخَرقكfor the tear you left مَرقَعاa patch
They gathered, but filled no breach in your place,
Al-Numan did not sheathe his sword of speech
And strove, but were no patch for the tear left by your loss.
Until you passed away, so your two days were together
ماnot أغمدsheathed النعمانُal-Nu'man سيفَthe sword لسانهof his tongue
حتىuntil ثويتَyou lay at rest فكانso was يومُكماthe day of you both معاtogether
Al-Nu'man did not sheathe the sword of his tongue
And the ignorant speaking of immortality after you
Until you lay at rest; then your day and his were one.
Found gloating to be sweet, so he sipped it
ومحدِّثٍand foretelling بالخُلدof immortality بعدكafter you جَهلُهhis ignorance
وجدَfound الشماتةَgloating حلوةًsweet فتجرَّعاso he gulped it down
And many a man whose ignorance promises him immortality after you
Life did not quench its thirst for you with effort
Found gloating sweet, and gulped it down.
So your death quenched it, rendered helpless, so it bid farewell
لمnot تشفهcured him منكof you الحياةُlife بجهدهِby his efforts
فشفاهُso cured him موتُكyour death عاجزاًpowerless فتودَّعاso he took his ease
Life did not cure him of you, for all his striving;
Let him not gloat, even if he lives on later
Your death cured him, powerless, and he took his ease.
Inevitably he will follow your fate
لاlet him not يشمتنّgloat وإنand even if أقامhe remains مؤخَّراًleft till later
لابدّit is inevitable أنthat يقفوكhe follows you ذاكthat المَصرعاplace of death
Let him not gloat, though he has been left until later:
How many subjugations has he sold, and if he possessed wishes
He must follow you to that place of death.
It would suffice him as pride to elude your finger
كمhow many فُتَّهyou surpassed him باعاًarmspans ولوand if ملكhe possessed المنىall wishes
لكفاهit would suffice him فخراًas glory أنto يفوتَكsurpass you إصبعاa finger's breadth
By how many armspans you surpassed him! Had he all his wishes,
What is wrong with me? I felt comfort in a quarter of your house
It would be glory enough for him to surpass you by a finger's breadth.
I have become desolate and anxious from it
ماليwhat is wrong with me? وكنُتand I was بربعin the precincts داركof your home آنساًat ease
أمسيتُI have become منهfrom it موحَشاًestranged متفزِّعاfrightened
What has become of me? Once at ease in your dwelling,
And I see it barren after I had cultivated it
Now I am estranged from it and filled with fear.
Fertile through your friendship and your ease made it a pasture for me
وأراهand I see it جدباًbarren بعدafter ماthat قدalready زرتُهI visited it
خِصباًfertile بودّكwith your affection ليfor me ويُسرِكand your bounty مرتَعاas a pasture
And I see it barren, after once visiting it
Days whose sole possession against dispute is you
As a fertile pasture, rich in your love for me and your bounty.
Whatever loyalty saturates and fulfills

فيin كلّall ماthat which أروَىquenched thirst الوفاءُloyalty وأشبَعاand satisfied hunger
In the days when I possessed from you, unchallenged—
Deaf regarding who blamed him
In all with which loyalty quenched thirst and satisfied hunger—
And a mouth quick to what delighted me

وفماًand a mouth إلىtoward ماwhat سرَّنيpleased me متسرِّعاswift
An ear slow to heed reproaches made on my account,
So I will cry for you from a sincere heart
And a mouth swift toward whatever made me glad.
Even if an insincere eye cried
فلأبكينّكso I shall surely weep for you منfrom فؤادٍa heart ناصحsincere

I shall surely weep for you from a sincere heart
And I will preserve you with my tongue, and you will not see
In grief, even if an eyelid weeps in pretense.
A right wasted by the eloquent and free
ولأحفظنّكand I shall surely preserve you باللسانwith the tongue ولنand never will ترىyou see

حقاًa claim علىupon الحرّthe noble freeman الفصيحthe eloquent مضيَّعاneglected
And I shall surely preserve you with my tongue; you will never see
Your burial site joined the ruins, and revolving fate
A claim upon a noble, eloquent man go unfulfilled.
Is pleased by its meadow, the patched place

May a copiously dripping cloud visit your dust despite decay,
Filled bosomed over the soil, grieving
Pleasing the barren ground with its meadow.
Watering the life source if it was weaned of what it suckled

Full-breasted, tenderly rumbling over the dust,
It took from the north wind a covenant for it
It gives drink when the rain weans what it once suckled.
Of safety and a vow it will not breach

The east wind has won for it from the north wind
If fate betrayed my pact, it only
A pledge of safety and an assurance that it will not disperse.
Broke it, though it sought to do good

If Time has betrayed my bond with you, it has only
Gently, o fate, for it is hardened, the staff
Worked to undo itself and strike against its own graces.
Not softened except a source of pain

You have traded shots with me: leave my hand a forearm
If the one who took the friend from me had
To strike the quarry dead—or leave my hand room to draw.

With his equal, no tear duct of mine would be wet.
