I pitied a people whose necks had not bowed

Beneath poetry, and so they thought they had borne it.

And they rattled the gates before it, believing

That, by knocking at them so long, they had arrived.

And their share of it is that of the seed-crackers who hoped

That honey might be gathered from the seeds of bitter colocynth.

They rushed into its surging seas,

While the sweet spring within them is but a trickle among us.

It is a highway whose white paths lie hidden,

Yet, in the eyes' view, it is all pathways.

And the pages are filled, and the pens are wearied,

And whenever they hear a speaker, they copy his words.

And verse and criticism are inborn in some—

A few—just as ears and eyes are created.

They cannot be acquired through imitation or literary learning,

Nor can knowledge or practice bestow them.
