أعانقُI embrace غصنَa bough البانِthe bān tree منهاin her stead تعِلَّةًas consolation
فأُنكرهyet I find it unfamiliar مسّاًto the touch وأعرفهُand I recognize it قدّاin stature
I embrace a bān-tree bough as a solace in her stead;
yet its touch is strange to me, though its form is familiar.
وأعدِلُand I equate لثمَkissing الأُقحوانِthe chrysanthemum بثغرهاwith her mouth
فأُرزَقُهso I am granted it برقاًas lightning وأُحرَمُهand I am denied it بَرْداas coolness
And I equate kissing the chrysanthemum with kissing her mouth;
so I am granted its lightning, but denied its coolness.
فللّهِso, by God مَنthe one whom لمnot أستعِضI find a substitute عنهin her place غائباًwhile she is absent
ولمand not أرI find منهfrom her ظالماًthough unjust أبداًever بُدَّاa way to do without
So, by God, I have found no substitute for her in her absence,
nor, though she is unjust, ever a way to do without her.
