Be content in your estrangement, for the home country is a home
And loose the mounts, for the halting-place is bondage.
The mounts have been relieved of their saddles, for the climate is hot

You stood against it, the sharpened swords like
For between any two regarding you is a secret
young locusts sent flying above armored men's helmets.
They blamed the stars of fortune ignorantly though
ولوand even if أنَّindeed حدَّthe edge of السيفthe sword خانكbetrayed you دونهagainst it

Had the sword's edge betrayed you against it,
The spheres revolve wherever you turn them
good fortune, unhindered by stumbling, would have stood by you.
Your feet halt the lions as if

Let the two rain-clouds of your palms pour: the enemy will drown in them.
Your side is glory not to be touched
Brand your enemies with your name, for your name is fire.
They are too shy to resist rights as if
ولاand do not تَلْقَmeet يومَthe day of الرَّوعterror إلاexcept مُصالتاًbrandishing

Meet the day of terror only brandishing
Your veil from excessive modesty is a headcover
your good fortune, if blades and edges grow dull.
Answer the call, O minister, that has not

For a sword-wound must have an avenger
Been frequently answered though often repeated
to avenge it, while fortune's wounds admit no recompense.
The hearths of my passion call you in longing

God decreed concerning those who envy your sovereignty that they
My heart, my heated breath, the burning coals
are fuel, and their rage at you is sparks.
I pretend with the gloaters fearing their rebuke and my apparent

Their tongues, for all their anger, are cold and wet,
Coolness to the hidden fire within me
while their livers behind their ribs are burning.
How long will absence enervate my back and how long will

They warned one another, fearing their talk might be raised aloud;
My side at the embers of separation find rest
not even two exchange a whisper about you.
Because of the distance between us I appear stretched

They ignorantly blamed the stars of fortune, whereas
Like leather or only borrowed clothes
the spheres revolve for you wherever they are made to turn.
I wish days that disturb me with your nearness

You stand firm against lions' advancing feet, as though
Would depart like the leaving of intoxication
your precinct, too mighty to be assailed, were a lair.
My craving for you almost makes me fly

You blush to withhold what is owed, as though
Can a lightweight bird fly in the sky?
your face-wrap, from excess modesty, were a veil.
A people were emboldened by you to disparage me

Answer a call, O lord of ministers, which you have not
So they looted your accounts and envied
answered promptly, though it has called you repeatedly.
They did not know the extent of your kindness toward me

It calls you yearningly; its fire's hearths
So I have loss and harm from them
are my heart, and my hot breaths its blaze.
If they withheld the water you gave me to drink

I conceal it, fearing those who gloat; my outward state
Then from where are my meadows watered and settled?
is a measure and a gauge of what lies within me.
They knew your gift cannot be reclaimed

Nor are clothes borrowed from you
for my side a resting-place on separation's embers?
May God lead your return to gain retribution

It is as though, facing the distance between you and me,
From those who diminished me and restore what was lost
my skin were sliced, or my entrails tormented.
With every dear one who offers what her people prized

Would that the time which delighted me with your nearness
She has a high office with her beauty and carpentry
had lost its hangover just as its intoxication passed.
When she comes to mind among the transmitters they imagine

My longing toward you almost carries me into flight;
Caskets of musk are what they carry
but does a clipped-wing bird have flight in the sky?
She nods with the gifts her attributes bring

Some people, after your departure, were emboldened to oppress me,
As if her necklaces were docile birds gifted to you
so they launched assaults on your ancestral honors and raided.
She exudes a Persian grace native to her breed

They did not know how greatly your bounty inclined
Yet tenderness and coquetry for Arabs in her
toward me; through them I suffer loss and injury.
When she visits bareheaded your supremacy is her crown

If they withhold the water you channeled to me,
And rapt attention suits her beauty
from where will my tree be watered and nourished?
She bears a mark of her beauty for the festival

They know that your gifts cannot be reclaimed,
Arabic taste is her ornament and rhyme
nor is any garment you wear borrowed.
If my words fall short of reaching you

I have a purpose in sending them though few
and vengeance be gained against whoever seeks to diminish me,

Mihragan bears a beauty-mark from its loveliness;
Friday and Saturday intervene between it and the poem.
