وكنتُand I was وأيّامwhile the days المزارvisiting رخيّةٌeasy
عليَّfor me ورُخصُand the ease of الوصلunion ليfor me فيكwith you يُطمعُinspires hope
And I was—when the days of visiting were easy for me,
And I, while the days of visiting were easy
and easy union with you raised my hopes—
for me, and the ease of union with you stirred my hopes,
أعِزُّI act proudly فلاso not أعطيI give الهوىlove فيكfor you حقَّهits due
منof الشكرgratitude والمعطَىand what is given معwith الكفرِingratitude يُمنعُis withheld
too proud to give my love for you its rightful due
acted proudly, denying my love for you its due
of gratitude; what is bestowed is withheld when met with ingratitude.
of gratitude; a gift met with ingratitude is withheld.
فلماthen when استردّreclaimed الدهرُTime منّيfrom me عطاءهits gift
وعادتand began again شُعوبٌbranches فيin الهوىlove تتصدعُsplit apart
Then, when Time reclaimed from me its gifts,
Then, when Time reclaimed its gift from me,
and branches in love began once more to split apart,
and love's branches began to split apart again,
قعدتُI sat معwith الهجرانestrangement أبكيهI weep for it نادماًregretful
وأسألand I ask عنهabout it ماضياًgone by كيفhow يرجعُit returns
I sat with estrangement, weeping for it in remorse,
I sat with estrangement, weeping for it in regret,
and asked after it, now past: how can it return?
and asked about it, now gone: how could it return?
