And a son in whom I rejoiced when I was told, “A boy!”
A son I rejoiced in when told he’s a boy
So I guarded him, as pearls are guarded in their shells.
I protected him, and jewels are protected in shells

I fear the winds might blow upon him, so you do not
I fear the winds upon him, should they blow
see him anywhere but in my lap or on my shoulder.
Never to see him but in my lap or on my shoulder

In my admiration of him, I am jealous even of kissing him
I'm surprised how jealous I am that one day
one day, though kissing him brings me nearer to honor.
I’d kiss him, though to kiss him nears my honor

He struts atop a chair I was given for him
He roams atop a chair I was granted for him
by al-Husayn, his figure standing straight as the letter alif.
By al-Husayn with a stature like a banner

Like a sword its owner loosed amid the terror of battle
Like a sword its owner sent into the fray
against the densely massed battalion, without halting.
Against the regiments, unhalting in its drive
أخفيتُهُI hid him وهوwhile he لمّاnot yet تَخفَwas hidden صورتُهُhis form
وهاand here هوhe الآنnow ماnot أخفيتُهُI hid him وخَفِيand he became hidden
I hid him while his form was not yet hidden;
I hid him, and when his image was concealed
and here he is now: I have not hidden him, yet he is hidden.
There he is now, I hid him, and he hides
