ومكنونةٍ بين الخدور أقامها

ومكنونةٍ بين الخدور أقامها

هواي ونُصحي حالتين على رِجلِ

هواي ونُصحي حالتين على رِجلِ

And a hidden maiden among the curtained chambers, set upright

Hidden away among the abodes my passion and my good counsel established her

by my desire and my counsel, in two states, upon one foot.

Two conditions upon a single foundation

قديمةِ عهدِ العمر تُطمَثُ عانساً

قديمةِ عهدِ العمر تُطمَثُ عانساً

فإن ولدت منّي فتىً ولدتْ مثلي

فإن ولدت منّي فتىً ولدتْ مثلي

Old in years, she is deflowered while still a spinster;

Old in the era of life, growing spinsterly

so if she bears a youth by me, she bears one like me.

If she bears a boy for me, she will bear one like me

لها أخواتٌ في البلاد كثيرةٌ

لها أخواتٌ في البلاد كثيرةٌ

ووالدها في الدهر منقطع النسلِ

ووالدها في الدهر منقطع النسلِ

She has many sisters throughout the lands,

She has many sisters in the lands

and her father, throughout the ages, has no offspring.

And her father in time is cut off from progeny

تقصُّ علَيَّ الحقَّ ما حضَرتْ معي

تقصُّ علَيَّ الحقَّ ما حضَرتْ معي

ولا تصدقُ الإخبارَ بعدي ولا قبلي

ولا تصدقُ الإخبارَ بعدي ولا قبلي

She tells me the truth as long as she is with me,

She relates to me the truth of what was present with me

and she does not report truthfully after me or before me.

And believes not the reports, after me nor before me
