And a face's surface, among faces I have loved,

I study the scratches upon her and the scars.

She presents herself to me while beauties turn away,

so I recall her temples and breast.

At times, when I behold her, I am forbearing,

dignified; at other times I am enraptured.

And what delights me about them is that I never see

a beloved of my heart unless I see him nearby.

She captivated me with men's words, and sweet to me

was her fruit, though she never spoke and I saw no perfume.

So I entrusted to her what God had entrusted to my soul:

robes sewn, bearing no neck openings,

falling short of her feet and heads,

and filling her spines and sides.

When she is stripped of them, they shield her from her flaws,

and if she is clothed in them, they conceal no flaws.
