A winsome maiden who withholds no lovely word,

Nor cares which of her two secrets comes to light.

Pure of girdle, gentle through and through,

Save the longed-for speech concealed within her.

Let the night not deny who lies beside her,

Despite night's uncertainties and what it hides of her.

I visited her by night; the full moon complained of her face,

And the star resembled her earring, but for the ear.

She awoke, stumbling over her tongue,

While the remnants of drowsiness still clung to it.

She says, 'Who?' though she knows—

She asks only out of habit—who I am.

And the watchers were eyes and tongues

Bound by sleep's thread, kept from me and her.

Thus what fully satisfied chastity took place,

While some of what would please passion did not:

Reproaches fragrant as the east wind, and snatches

    Of mutual lament, like scattered drops from rain clouds;

The furtive glance, and the kiss that does not

Know what lies hidden beyond the lips.

And in the many-branched conversation between us

Came mention of the noble: how few in this age,

And the neglect of merit and the weakness of its people,

And how fidelity had died and been buried.

So we found no gallant but Ibn Ayyub,

Alert to what noble deeds desire.

No drop of water cooling in a hollow,

Wiped free of grime by the east wind's palm,

Untouched by either lip or hand

Since the cloud left there what it had stored,

On high, clear of specks, guarded by

A pool that found a hidden nook upon a bough,

Is sweeter, when drunk, than his character,

Nor is the bee's harvest mingled with milk.

Nor are sturdy ropes of palm fiber,

Fastened to a buttress of every mountain,

Firmer than he in friendship's twin bonds,

With no hypocrisy among them, open or concealed.

Nor would perfection, speaking for itself,

If perfection were given a body and a tongue,

Unite more qualities of lordship than he,

Manifest even were he tested with a sounding probe.

O steady rain of thanks, whose train is long,

Swollen with heavy water, sagging low,

    Its brimming udders drooping

With sweet utterance and lovely meaning:

The wind of verse chants it onward in rajaz,

As though its driver had been told, 'Sing!'

Untie the bags, and rain upon Muhammad

Praise filling earth's ravines, not counted as a favor,

    إن الثناءَ للندى خيرُ ثمنْ

    In recompense for the good he has done before;

Praise is the best payment for generosity.

Visit his courtyards time and again, deputizing

For me in congratulations, obligatory and customary,

So the envious may know, concerning him, that I

Have traded all others for him, fearing no loss,

And that he has gained in me a cutting sword

Against them, which no shields can fend off.

As long as a leaping she-camel dances beneath her saddle

Toward Mina, soft-bodied and rough of halter,

And as long as they hasten, bare-bodied, to the

Pilgrimage, and spend the morning slaughtering sacrificial camels:

Every prayer they raise—may his be

Whatever portion of it is assured acceptance.
