For me, this palm tree is

    a carpet of ecstasy

    for my ascent,

and how long it had been delayed!

So it is wings for me,

    never borne

    even once by eagles.

For me, this palm tree is

    a ladder of light

    to the expanses of revelation.

Long ago, we assumed the character of palm trees

and said to the sparrows of the cities:

Come... come, take shelter in the shade.

Then we readied the evening for departure,

and readied the women as trees that follow our dreams.

And we said... peace be upon those departing.

Long ago, we foretold that the night would be sails,

appointed times that condense the shrouded joy

    between desire's antidote and death

    at jasmine's thresholds,

so that the homeland may live

with all meanings... and all songs,

and the flag redeemed by sacrifice.

We cried out... cried out in the homeland's name, and said: We will die

so that the palm trees may live, and an olive tree may be freed at auction.

Long ago, the grass aged in our visions... we became one

with the sky's color... and proclaimed to the sea the palm trees' manifesto.
