Who can match your face as you fight,

a moon wooed by the ears of grain?

    Play.

My life for you: your flute, the machine gun, is true musical rapture.

And all the nightingales' warbling is illusion.

You are the one who invented love with a weapon.

    So woo however you wish.

Your hands have traded nothing but their lover, the machine gun,

    for a machine gun,

    while the rulers seek alternatives.

    O sole true resolve,

while all of them are commercial resolve and a contractor's statement.

From what womb have you come?

And who, do you think, is she who gives birth to earthquakes?!

It is the hour of utter death,

spreading the old fear across faces.

at the footfalls of the bombs.

    In these moments,

    you were a beacon.

For whenever a battalion turned upon you,

    you cried, “God is greatest!”

so the dust burst into flame,

and you stretched out terror like the Sirat.

And if your brows knit together, then Azrael descends.

    Which way could they flee?...

And you are an ifrit at every exit and entrance.

And your sniper rifle is a terrifying film,

whose title is “The Bullet Shows No Courtesy.”

    These rifles

    do not want a hand that guesses;

so whom but you will they trust?

For the soul is a plate,

    fragile as sweets,

when their eyes well with tears and they moan.

    she desires you,

    and how she yearns!

    And you charged,

    you raised,

    you set up,

    you broke,

you turned the barricade into a poetry gathering.

Say whatever you wish; shellfire applauds.

And you charged; your size doubled,

and my palm filled with henna,

when the palm fronds ululated for you.

And I almost reach you, but I have not arrived.

Where could I find luck in union?

O sugar, my water will dissolve

if I touch you; so I drew away.

    You were a poem on the sky's lip;

I read... and so I was.

From the sacred clay of your boot,

I will make whatever I wished for.

    You tickled the weapon's flank

are a lovelier image and a voice.

A page from the battle's love poetry.
