When I saw you for the first time,

    I said to myself:

Who smuggled this Greek statue to the land of Basra?

Or who planted the date palms in Athena's palm

so I might pluck a date from your cheek?

    Like astonishment

was your face when it slipped, O Venus, into my breast

    and came apart like a grape cluster in the dish of my eyes;

so you see how I gather up the thought—to write about you.

And like a flash of folk poetry,

your eyes opened the passageways of my soul,

so I cried out: God! God!

    Do it again!

    Shall I explain, O Venus...

how the temple of love for you was founded in my heart

    from the very first glance?

    And you glanced once—

all the seagulls of my life took flight,

and my imagination stumbled over the laurel,

so the heart turned green from the stumble,

and the marsh permeated me like the wisdom of Socrates,

so I might know how to explain the secret of the bond between my mind's reverie

    when you passed by

and the reverie of one through whom wine passed.

I stammer, O Venus, to a weeping child.

How will I hide the trembling of love's water in the palm of my letters when I see you?

    I, O Venus...

    ...I, O

    . . . نوس

    Ve...

    ...nus

I do not know what to say...

But I will design a letter

    Latin,

    Pharaonic,

    Arabic,

    Indian,

    African,

    polar,

so all people may understand my words about you

if I say that you are:

    و

a mythical silence that speaks only through the eyes,

    and

    و

a calm that breeds in lovers' breasts for a revolution,

    and

    و

a remnant of Paradise's honey on earth,

    and

an open heart, like innate nature,

a love that, like children, speaks openly without lying,

a body designed expressly to shatter my patience,

and the waist: an alliance of all the world's femininities,

and to this I affix all ten fingerprints.

The smile: a mystic at night prayer, and the unveiling is the south.

And why, when I see you, does my blood run backward?

    Refreshing as milk for children...

and your voice is delicious, like the remnants of sleep in my eyes at dawn,

and the night is like a crossed-out line.

Troy has returned, but out of love this time, O Venus...

and I am a soldier victorious through my heart's defeat.

    How sweet Troy's return is!

is like a blind man's imagination.

Indeed, dying for you is worship.
