    They say: he is gone.

And the raven's trumpet kept applauding with words.

    They say: he is gone.

    Will you return?

I released this question as a wing toward you.

And I lit the lantern of my life as a beacon to the Sindbad of the answer.

And I dusted my eyes with waiting.

I watch all directions with one eye,

and with an eye that mingles evening with day.

    They say: he is gone.

And the spiders' threads began weaving me into a rendezvous,

    and my memory dries out.

    Everything has evaporated

    except your eyes,

O my thirst for the mirage!

    Two winters have passed,

    and two summers have passed.

And all seasons, when you are absent, are winter.

And you come; I see you ... and drown in you.

And touching you is the seventh impossibility:

for how can the body of fog be touched?!

And I feel that the clouds desired me.

I evaporated out of desire for them ...

    And here I am, ascending,

    ascending,

until I dwelt in the pulse of the clouds,

and until I mingled thoroughly with the wind,

so it might fill my memory with harbors and the road ...

And here I am, born as a spirit roaming the deserts of the book,

and seeking a homeland that has lost its way ...

and it, too, has lost its way.

And there is no difference: estrangement is everyone's address.

    وشكلُ انقراضي الحقائبُ

    They say: he is gone.

    And suitcases are the shape of my extinction;

they have left nothing of me but the ache of parting.

And I am among the believers in your love.

A thousand Abu Jahls etched his memory into me out of sheer rage.

    And Bilal's rock

    still crouches upon me.

How, then, can I chant the Quran of your love, O you whose passion is a thousand doors and one?

And the Quran of your love cannot be chanted

unless my voice has grown wet with longing.

And I recite the first verses to the people:

Indeed, I seek refuge in the love of Iraq.

  23. ****

    ****

    You vanished among the faces,

so you came to appear from every face,

as though you were a spirit in everything around me,

letting life's meaning seep into a dead man glutted with annihilation,

because you, O you, are the secret of survival.

And from sheer longing I fall, a bird's feather,

bearing the signatures of every sky

it passed through like flowing light.

And to rest, it resigned from the wing,

but it had become steeped in the heights,

so it alighted on the dome of pride,

touching a body tensed with sorrow,

and the screams of battles had sunk into it.

    Its dreams tremble with anxiety,

and the body of the Euphrates trembles in anguish,

    in the form of water.

It exports slaughter, killing, and captive-taking,

and bleeds tears to the point of drought.

So who is beating within you—

is that your heart, or Karbala?

It revolves around you, and you revolve around it,

and the two of you meet.

    A strange dust rises,

    and a strange light,

and a quieter voice from the night

makes all the wounds sleep ...

for it is the hoarseness of the prophets.

And your going dark takes the shape of a morning without evening.

    And when everyone sleeps,

    I sense the earth's confiding.

It moans with longing for you,

and I realize how I will draw the face of absence.

For it has been said: he is gone.

And the raven's trumpet kept applauding with words.

    Will you return?

I lit the lantern of my life as a beacon

to the Sindbad of the answer.
