I announce to you the passing of souls whose witness has fallen,

In what lies beyond place, meeting the witness of pre-eternity.

I announce to you the passing of hearts where so often poured

Seas of wisdom from the clouds of revelation.

I announce to you the passing of truth's tongue, which long ago

Perished, and its memory in the imagination is as nothingness.

I announce to you the passing of eloquence, before which bow

The words of every eloquent, fluent, discerning speaker.

    لَم يَبقَ مِنهُنَّ إِلّا دارِسُ الرِمَمِ

    I announce to you the passing of the hearts' intimations, all together;

Nothing remains of them but faded traces of mouldering bones.

    I announce—by your honor—the passing of a company's virtues,

Their mounts were of the anguish of restraint.

All have passed away: neither a person nor a trace remains,

As 'Ad passed away, and the people of Iram vanished.

And they left behind a company who trail their garb,

More inarticulate than lambs and kids—indeed, more inarticulate than livestock.
