The wind rose, and the sky grew grim;
The wind roared and the sky darkened,
and the crescent hid itself, looking askance.
The crescent hid looking askance.

Light was blotted out, save for a few lines
The light was erased except for some lines
that dawn had drawn; they faded, no longer readable.
Dawn had drawn them but they could not be read.

Then lightning drew a sword of faint light;
Lightning flashed, a faint ray of light
it slashed the sackcloth of darkness and fled.
Ripping through the darkness with bursts.
وَانْبَرَىand stepped forth الرعدُthunder مُنْذِرًاwarning بالبَلَايَاof calamities

And thunder stepped forth, warning of calamities;
Thunder rumbled with warnings of affliction
and the deep sea raged, in flood and ebb.
And the waves surged back and forth.

The elements of the cosmos called one another to revolt;
The elements of the universe called for revolt
then thunderbolts plunged down like burning coals.
And lightning bolts rained down as embers.

And the winds competed in the horizon’s arena;
The winds raced in the arena of the horizon
so the vault of heaven roared aloud.
And evening came as the winds howled.

They taught us that nature is a mother;
It taught us that nature is a mother
alas for a mother devoid of feeling!
Alas! A mother's wailing is ruinous.
يَاO لَأُمٍّwhat a mother خَرْسَاءmute إِنْif حَدَّثَتْنَاshe speaks to us

O mute mother, if you speak to us
her speech overflows with fear and terror.
Your talk overflows with fear and alarm.

Her whisper is thunder, and thunderbolts her confidences;
Your whisper is thunder, lightning your murmur
and volcanoes are a sigh, found burning hot.
Volcanoes your moan that kindles concern.

Woe to you, mother, granted a thousand tongues,
O mother you were given a thousand tongues
yet you keep your counsel, revealing no secret.
Yet you keep the secret, you do not divulge it.

O mother, how can you hide from us
within your folds, the One who makes the sea dry land?
The maker of oceans and land in your folds?
كَيْفَhow تُخْفِينَdo you hide وَالِدًاa father عَنْfrom بَنِيهhis children

How do you hide a father from his children,
How can you hide the father from his children
when fathers ought rather to appear with affection?
When a father's affection is best?
أَصَحِيحٌis it true يَاO أُمُّmother أَنَّthat أَبِيmy father مثليlike me

Is it true, Mother, that my father is like me
Is it true, O mother, that my father is like me
in form, and fills the universe with goodness?
In form, and fills the universe with righteousness?!

So answer: a mother’s duty is to acquaint
So answer me, a mother's duty is to introduce
her children with a father exalted in rank.
Her children to a father mighty and dignified.

Tell me: has God dwelt in your house
Tell me: did God secretly reside in your home?
in secret? The householder knows best.
The home's dweller knows best.

Alas, I lost Him, and my hope was lost;
Oh I lost Him and lost my hope
so guide me to Him; it will earn you a reward.
So guide me to Him, you will gain reward.
فَأَجَابَتْthen she answered إِنِّيindeed I أُفَتِّشُam searching عَنْهُfor him
لَاnot أَرَاهُI see him، سُبْحَانَهُglory be to him، أَيْنَwhere قَرَّاhas he settled
Then she answered, “Indeed, I am searching for Him.
She replied: I search for Him
I do not see Him—glory be to Him! Where has He settled?”
I do not see Him, Glory be to Him, where did He alight?
قُلْتُI said: هَلَّاwhy not، فَقَطَّبَتْthen she knit حَاجِبَيْهَاher eyebrows
فَأَرَتْنِيthen she showed me فِيin وَجْهِهَاher face الْجهمِgrim شَرَّاevil
I said, “Why not?” Then she knit her brows
I said: Come now! She frowned
and showed me evil in her grim face.
And showed me the scowl on her face.
وَأَشَارَتْand signaled إِلَىto الْعَوَاصِفِthe storms أَنْto سِيرِيmarch

She signaled to the storms: “March,
She pointed to the storms, go!
and raze whatever towers high upon His earth!”
And take heed of His earth however it rages.
فَاسْتَجَرْنَاso we sought refuge مِنْهَاfrom her بِهَاin her وَهيَwhile she غَضْبَىwas angry

So we sought refuge from her in her, while she raged,
So we fled from her in anger
and sheltered by a rock, seeking cover.
And took refuge behind a boulder.
فَرَأَيْنَاthen we saw الْأَمْوَاجَthe waves تَقْتَحِمُstorming الشَّطَّthe shore

Then we saw the waves storming the shore
We saw the waves storming the shore
like blind armies, charging and retreating.
Blind armies attacking again and again.

How many homes crumbled and palaces
the raging storms turned into a grave!
The raging winds made into graves.

Among the spreading trees, they forced every defiant one to prostrate itself,
From the shelters, each croucher prostrated
that had never rubbed its face in dust or bowed its breast.
No face whitened, no chest sighed.

And there were trees swaying dejected
then stumbled, small and great alike.
Whether small or large all keeled over.

An upheaval in nature swept the earth,
A revolt in nature swept the land
as Ya‘rub swept through Kisra’s realm.
As the desert tribes swept the kingdom of Persia.

His name throughout existence, in secret and aloud?
Secretly and openly in existence.

Nature’s revolt subsided, and the wind
Nature’s revolt subsided and the winds
glided through the air, walking with a graceful gait.
Calmed in the air walking steadily.

Was meant by the demise to renew.

What they destroy right they build left.

Messengers of growth and renewal—rather, a fire-stick
Messengers of life and rebirth, indeed life
kindled whenever nature wills.
Whenever nature willed turned bleak to vivid.

endure, on land or sea.
Ships to stir the universes spreading and unfurling.

Since old, man was busy pondering
breaking the backs of towering things, one after another.
“Things” preoccupied him age after age.

Since ancient times, man has been worn thin by thought;
What he saw as knowledge yesterday
things have preoccupied him, age after age.
He sees today as ignorance, thus time passed.
