اللَهُGod يَعلَمُknows أَنّيthat I كَمدُgrief-stricken
لاnot أَستَطيعُI am able أَبُثُّI express ماwhat أَجِدُI feel
God knows that I am grief-stricken.
God knows that I am tight-lipped
I cannot express what I feel.
I cannot express what I feel
نَفَسانُtwo souls ليmine نَفسٌa soul تَضَمَّنَهاenfolded it
بَلَدٌa land وَأُخرىand another حازَهاheld it بَلَدُa land
I have two souls: one soul is enfolded by
My soul harbors two souls
a land, and the other is held by another land.
One claimed by a country, the other by a homeland
وَأَرىand I see المُقيمَةَthe soul that remains لَيسَdoes not يَنفَعُهاbenefit it
صَبرٌpatience وَلَيسَand does not يُقيمُهاsustain it جَلَدُfortitude
And I see that the soul that remains is not helped by
And I see staying does no good
patience, nor is it sustained by fortitude.
Patience is futile, endurance fails
وَأَظُنُّand I think غائِبَتيmy absent soul كَشاهِدَتيlike my present soul
بِمَكانِهاin its place تَجِدُfeels الَّذيwhat أَجِدُI feel
And I think my absent soul, like my present soul,
And absence from my love is like her presence
feels, where it is, what I feel.
She feels what I feel, though far away
