You took possession of my mind, my gaze, and my hearing,

And my soul, my inward parts, and all of me, entirely.

And you left me lost in your wondrous beauty,

So I did not know where I was in the sea of love.

And you instructed me not to reveal your secret,

But the overflow of my tears revealed what I concealed.

Then, when my patience was exhausted and my fortitude waned,

And sleep forsook me, and I was denied my bed,

I complained to the judge of love, saying, “My beloveds

Have shunned me and said, ‘You are a pretender in love.’”

And I have witnesses to my ardent love and sorrow,

Who corroborate my claim whenever I come to plead:

My sleeplessness, my longing, my dejection, and my burning anguish,

And my passion, my sickness, my pallor, and my tears.

And it is a wonder that I yearn for them,

And longingly ask after them, though they are with me.

And my eye weeps blood, though they are in its dark pupil,

And my heart laments separation, though they are between my ribs.
