إلاexcept وواقعُand the roosting bird of سربthe flock of النومsleep قدalready طاراhad flown
The apparition roamed our valley; it never visited
Imagination roamed our valleys, never resting,
Except when the roosting bird of sleep's flock had already flown away.
Except when sleep's flock took flight and scattered.
لاno ذنبَblame للنومfor sleep بلrather للعينfor the eye تدفعُهit drives it away
بلrather للحشاfor the heart منfrom حشاشاتlast remnants of life الحشاthe heart ناراa fire
No blame lies with sleep, but with the eye that drives it away;
Sleep is not to blame, but the eye that chases it away.
Rather, with the heart—a fire from the heart's last remnants of life.
No, it's the madness of madmen that set it aflame.
لاmay not واخذَhold to account اللهGod أحبابيmy beloveds بماfor what صنعواthey did
إنindeed الحبيبthe beloved لمحبوبsurely loved وإنand even if جاراhe was unjust
May God not hold my beloveds to account for what they did.
God has taken my loved ones for what they have done.
The beloved is surely loved, even if he is unjust.
Though the beloved may wrong the lover, still he is dear.
وإنَّand indeed منof حكمةwisdom المولىthe Lord ورحمتهand His mercy
ألاnot to يحمّلburden أهلpeople of الحسنِbeauty أوزاراburdens of sin
And it is part of the Lord's wisdom and mercy
In the wisdom and mercy of God,
Not to burden the beautiful with sins.
The good are not burdened with others' sins to bear.
مِنْfrom أينَwhere للقلبِfor the heart ذنبٌfault إنماonly امتحنواthey were tested
بأعينِby eyes تجتنيgather الأنوارَthe lights نواراblossoms
How can the heart be at fault? They were only tested
How can the heart be blamed? They were but tested
By eyes that gather light as blossoms.
By eyes that reap light and sow it barren.
مَنْwho قيّدbound اللحظَthe gaze فيin روضاتgardens أوجههمtheir faces
منwho أرسلreleased الدمعَthe tears فوقَover الخدِthe cheek مدراراpouring abundantly
Who bound the gaze in the gardens of their faces?
Who shackled the glance in their beauty's garden?
Who set the tears pouring over the cheek?
Who let tears flow freely down the cheek's slope?
مَنْwho قالَsaid للقلبِto the heart فيin طيّthe folds of الجوانحthe ribs طِرْfly!

Who told the heart, within the folds of the ribs, 'Fly'?
Who told the heart, tucked in the ribs: "Take flight!"
So it flew, though God had not made it a flying creature.
Yet God did not create it with wings to take flight.

عمداًdeliberately ويطلبُand seeks منfrom أحبابهhis beloveds الثاراvengeance
The lover reaps his death with his own eyes,
With his eyes, the lover reaps his own demise,
Deliberately, and seeks vengeance against his beloveds.
Then from his beloved seeks vengeance as recompense.

لوif يجعلgives اللهGod للعشاقto lovers أبصاراeyes
He would have seen the wrong he commits,
He would see the wrong he brings upon himself
Had God given lovers eyes.
If God gave lovers eyes that truly see.
