عداوة لا لكفّكَ من قديمٍ

فلا تعجبْ لمقراضٍ لئيمِ

فلا تعجبْ لمقراضٍ لئيمِ

“No” has long borne enmity toward your palm;

An ancient enmity not for your hands

so do not marvel at a base pair of scissors.

So wonder not at mean men's cruel demands

لئن أدماكَ فهْولهُ شبيهٌ

لئن أدماكَ فهْولهُ شبيهٌ

وقد يَسْطو اللئيمُ على الكريمِ

وقد يَسْطو اللئيمُ على الكريمِ

If it has bloodied you, it resembles “no”;

If they should test you, it is their way

and the ignoble may assail the noble.
