فَإِنso if تَغضَبyou grow angry فَلَستَthen you are not المَرءَthe man تَرضىyou are satisfied
وَلَمand I have not أَعلَمكَknown you إِلّاexcept مِنfrom إِيادِIyad
If you grow angry, you are not a man to be appeased,
If you get angry, you won't be satisfied with anyone,
And I have known you only as one of Iyad.
And I only made you aware out of friendship,
أَسَرَّكَdid it delight you? أُمor يَسوؤُكَit distresses you ماwhat فَعَلناwe did
غَداةَon the morning of الأَحرَمَينِal-Ahramayn إِلىtoward السَوادِal-Sawad
Did what we did delight you, or does it distress you,
Does it grieve you what we did
That morning at al-Ahramayn, toward al-Sawad?
The day after the sacred months, towards As-Sawad,
كَبيرَةِmighty blow جَيشِناour army لِبَنيagainst the sons of زُبَيدٍZubayd
فَغادَرَهُمso it left them بِرهَطِwith the clan of أِبيAbu (father of) نِجادِNijad
Our army's mighty blow against Banu Zubayd—
To the great army of Bani Zubaid,
It left them with the clan of Abu Nijad,
So he left them with the group of Abi Nijad
وَرَهطِand the clan of المازِنِيِّal-Mazini اَبيAbu (father of) كُعَيبٍKuʿayb
تَرَكناهُمwe left them كَباقِيَةِlike the remnants of الرَمادِash
And the clan of al-Mazini, Abu Kuʿayb;
And the group of Al-Mazini Abi Ka'b,
We left them like the remnants of ashes.
We left them like ashes that remain after the fire,
تَحومُcircle الطَيرُthe birds فَوقَهُمabove them وَجالَتand swept forth
عَلىagainst خَولانَKhawlan بِالأَسَلِwith spears الحِدادِsharp
Birds circle above them, and our force swept
The birds hover above them and the swords,
Against Khawlan with sharp spears.
With their sharp blades, circle them,
فَوَلّواso they fled عِندَat ذاكَthat وَأَمكَنوناand gave us access
مِنَto البيضِthe fair-skinned women الأَوانِسِthe amiable ones وَالخِرادِand the shy maidens
So they fled then, and put within our reach
So they retreated at that point and allowed us
The fair-skinned, amiable women and the shy maidens.
To seize the white maidens and the little ones,
غَنيمَةُspoils جَيشِناour army مِنfrom كُلِّevery حَيٍّtribe
مُعَكَّرَةُgathered in large herds الطَرائِفِnewly acquired possessions وَالتِلادِand long-held possessions
Our army's spoils from every tribe:
The war booty of our army from every tribe,
Great herds of newly acquired and long-held stock,
Spread out with its varieties and regions,
وَلُعسٍand dark-lipped women كَالظِباءِlike gazelles مُرَدَّفاتٍseated behind other riders
كَأَنَّas though عُيونَهاtheir eyes واهِيleaky المَزادِwaterskins
And dark-lipped women like gazelles, borne pillion,
With howdahs like gazelles in a line,
As though their eyes were leaking waterskins.
Their eyes as if captivated with pleasure.
