Shahla questions her returning travelers,
Shahla asks her cage keeper,
And asks about Malik: what has become of him?
And inquires about Malik, what he did.
ثَوىlay مالِكٌMalik بِبِلادِin the lands of العَدُوthe enemy
وِfinal syllable of 'the enemy' from the preceding line تَسفيscatter dust عَلَيهِover him رِياحُwinds الشَّمَلthe north
Malik lies in the enemy's land;
Malik took refuge in the land of the enemy,
The north winds scatter dust over him.
And the winds of estrangement blew upon him.
لِذَلِكَfor this شَهلَةُShahla جَهَّزَتنيequipped me
وَقَدand already حالَintervened دونَin the way of الإِيابِthe return home الأَجَلthe appointed time of death
For this, Shahla equipped me,
That's why Shahla readied me,
And death has already barred my return.
And fate stood in the way of return.
