And indeed I said to my daughter, while she seared

A sorrowful heart with deep-seated cares,

While she shed tears upon her cheeks,

In torrents from the anguish of parting—

Tears that almost wound whatever they pass

Over, or leave scars upon it—

For fear that death might strike her father

And he meet Death away from his kin:

Be silent; your tears have gashed my heart.

How often your tears have gashed hearts!

So may God ward off from me

The perils of what you fear, until I return.

Nothing that the Exalted One wills

Is difficult for Him; so call upon the One who answers.

And cease to tear my heart apart now,

Or make me suffer torment on my journey.

I am in God's grasp, whether I am

Far away or near to you.

How many a man have we seen come from afar,

And one staying upon his bed be stricken!

And spare me your sobbing, for I

Pay no heed to wailing once I have made up my mind.

God is enough for me; then, for travel, I brought forward

A sturdy she-camel—what a noble mount she is!
