وكستْهُ أوجاعُ السنين لبوسا
How many a heart has grown constricted after its joy,
How many a heart has narrowed after its joy,
And the pains of the years have clothed it in a garment.
And the sorrows of years have clothed it in misery.

أيبوحُwill he speak openly? أمor يُبقيhe keeps الكلامthe words حبيساimprisoned؟!
أيبوحُ أم يُبقي الكلام حبيسا؟!
Words crowd together in its depths:
Words crowd together in its depths,
Will he speak openly, or keep his words imprisoned?!
Shall it reveal or keep speech imprisoned?!

أُخِذ الكلام مُحرّفاً معكوسا
Then, if he speaks of what lies within him,
So if it speaks what is inside it,
His words are taken, distorted and reversed.
The words are taken distorted and inverted.

Do not reproach him if he wraps himself in his silence,
Do not blame it if its silence stammers,
Or lives with wounded feelings, despairing.
Or it lives with a wounded feeling, despairing.

لِيظلّso that it remains كُلّall كلامهِhis words محبوساimprisoned
لِيظلّ كُلّ كلامهِ محبوسا
This life had no room for his confiding,
This life was not wide enough for its revealings,
So all his words remain imprisoned.
For all its words to remain imprisoned.
