And hardest on a person are companions

Who squandered affection when it was entrusted to them.

A feeling that has so often drawn tears and blood

From hearts—and ask those who have experienced it.

When one of us lives in peace,

They come to him; but if he is troubled, they neglect him.

And can friendship be hoped for among people

Who, when a friend falls, avoid him?

If companions sell off their affection for us

And subject it to torment and squander it,

Then no regret and no reproach toward them,

For in hardship, faces are revealed.
