أَطلقتُ مِن شَيبانَ سَبعينَ عانياً

أَطلقتُ مِن شَيبانَ سَبعينَ عانياً

فأبُوا جميعاً كُلُّهُم لَيسَ يَشكُرُ

فأبُوا جميعاً كُلُّهُم لَيسَ يَشكُرُ

I freed seventy captives of Shayban.

I released seventy captives from Sheeban

Then they all returned—not one of them gives thanks.

Yet they all refused, not one was thankful

إذا كُنتَ في أفناءِ شَيبان مُنعِماً

إذا كُنتَ في أفناءِ شَيبان مُنعِماً

فجُزَّ اللِّحى إنَّ النَواصِيَ تُكفَرُ

فجُزَّ اللِّحى إنَّ النَواصِيَ تُكفَرُ

If you bestow favors among the clans of Shayban,

If you've been favored in the valleys of Sheeban

Then shear the beards, for the forelocks are concealed.

Shave your beard, surely the napes will atone

فعلَّ تَميماً أَن تُغِيرَ عليكمُ

فعلَّ تَميماً أَن تُغِيرَ عليكمُ

بِجَيشٍ وعَلِّي أَن أُغيرَ فأَقدِرُ

بِجَيشٍ وعَلِّي أَن أُغيرَ فأَقدِرُ

So perhaps Tamim will raid you

So Tameem decided to raid against you

With an army—and perhaps I will raid and prevail.

With an army, and I decided to raid and overpower

فلا شُكرَكُمُ أبغي إذا كُنتُ مُنعِماً

فلا شُكرَكُمُ أبغي إذا كُنتُ مُنعِماً

ولا وُدَّكُم في آخِرِ الدَّهرِ أُضمرُ

ولا وُدَّكُم في آخِرِ الدَّهرِ أُضمرُ

So I seek no gratitude from you when I bestow favors,

I do not seek your gratitude when I've favored you

Nor will I harbor affection for you, even at time's end.

Nor harbor affection for you till the end of time
