أَقِلَّاlessen, you two مَلامِيreproach of me فِيfor هَوَىlove of الشَّادِنِthe young gazelle الأَحْوَىthe dark-lipped
فَقَلْبِيfor my heart عَلَىto حَمْلِbear الْمَلامَةِreproach لاnot يَقْوَىhas the strength
You two, lessen your reproach of me for loving the dark-lipped fawn;
for my heart has no strength to bear reproach.
كَفَىsuffices بِالْهَوَىlove شُغْلاًas a distraction عَنِfrom اللَّوْمِreproach بِامْرِئٍfor a man
بَرَاهُhas wasted him الضَّنَىwasting sickness وَاسْتَمْطَرَتْand drew rain from عَيْنَهُhis eye الْبَلْوَىaffliction
Love is distraction enough from reproach for a man
whom wasting sickness has worn away and whose eye affliction has drawn rain from.
فَلَيْسَfor is not الْهَوَىlove سَهْلاًdocile فَأَلْوِيso I might turn عِنَانَهُits rein
وَإِنْand even though كُنْتُI am يَوْمَon the day of الرَّوْعِterror ذَاpossessing مِرَّةٍstrength أَلْوَىunyielding
For love is not docile enough for me to turn its rein,
though on the day of terror I am strong and unyielding.
هُوَit الْحُبُّlove يَعْتَامُchooses الْكِرَامَthe noble وَلَنْand will never تَرَىyou see
لَئِيماًa base man يَنَالُattains السَّبْقَprecedence فِيin الْفَضْلِexcellence أَوْor يَهْوَىloves
It is love that chooses the noble; you will never see
a base man take the lead in excellence, or fall in love.
وَمَنْand who ذَاthat one الَّذِيwho يَقْوَىhas the strength عَلَىto دَفْعِrepel مَاwhat أَتَىhas brought
بِهِwith it الْحُبُّlove مِنْof جوْرٍoppression وَسُلْطَانُهُand its power أَقْوَىstronger
And who is there strong enough to repel what
love has brought of oppression, when its power is stronger?
سَبُوقٌoutstripping إِذَاwhen جَارَىit races لَحُوقٌovertaking إِذَاwhen هَوَىit swoops
غَلُوبٌever-conquering إِذَاwhen بَادَىit confronts قَتُولٌdeadly إِذَاwhen أَهْوَىit strikes
It outstrips when it races, overtakes when it swoops;
it conquers when it confronts, and kills when it strikes.
لَهُit has سُورَةٌa fury لَوْif صَادَمَتْit collided with رُكْنَthe flank of يَذْبُلٍYadhbul
وَرَضْوَىand Radwa لَهَدَّتْit would surely shatter يَذْبُلاًYadhbul وَمَحَتْand erase رَضْوَىRadwa
It has a fury that, were it to strike the flank of Yadhbul
and Radwa, would shatter Yadhbul and erase Radwa.
فَحَتَّامَso until when يَلْحَانِيhe reproaches me الْعَذُولُthe faultfinder عَلَىfor الْهَوَىlove
أَلَيْسَdoes he not يَرَىsee مَاwhat بِيafflicts me فَيَجْتَنِبَand so avoid الشَّكْوَىcomplaint
How long, then, will the faultfinder reproach me for love?
Does he not see what ails me, and so refrain from complaint?
لَقَدْindeed سَامَنِيhe demanded of me طَيَّfolding away الْغَرَامِpassion وَمَاand did not دَرَىknow
بِأَنَّthat الْهَوَىlove الْعُذْرِيَّchaste يَكْبُرُis too great أَنْto يُطْوَىbe folded away
He demanded that I fold away my passion, not knowing
that chaste love is too great to be folded away.
وَبِيand with myself بَلْrather بِقَوْمِيwith my people الأَكْرَمِينَthe most noble خَرِيدَةٌa shy maiden
إِذَاwhen سَفَرَتْshe unveils كَادَتْalmost لَهَاbefore her الشَّمْسُthe sun أَنْto تَضْوَىwaste away
I would ransom with myself—nay, with my most noble people—a shy maiden:
when she unveils, the sun almost wastes away before her.
مِنَamong الْغِيدِthe lissome beauties كَحْلاءُdark-rimmed الْمَحَاجِرِthe eye sockets لَوْif رَنَتْshe gazed
إِلَىat القَسِّthe priest فِيin نَامُوسِهِhis cell أَخْطَأَwould falter in النَّجْوَىwhispered prayer
One of the lissome beauties, with kohl-dark eyes—were she to gaze
at the priest in his cell, he would falter in his whispered prayer.
تُمِيتُshe kills وَتُحْيِيand revives مَنْwhomever تَشَاءُshe wishes بِلَحْظِهَاwith her glance
فَمِنْso some عَاشِقٍlover يَحْيَاlives وَمِنْand some عَاشِقٍlover يَثْوَىlies dead
She kills and revives whomever she wishes with her glance;
one lover lives, while another lies dead.
بَعَثْتُI sent لَهَاto her قَلْبِيmy heart عَلَىin إِثْرِthe wake of لَحْظَةٍa glance
فَمَاand not عَادَreturned إِلَّاexcept وَهْوَwhile it was بِالْحُسْنِby beauty مُسْتَهْوَىcaptivated
I sent her my heart in the wake of a glance,
and it returned only as a captive to beauty.
وَأَفْنَيْتُand I exhausted عُمْرِيmy life فِيin رِضَاهَاher favor فَلَمْbut did not أَنَلْI attain
سِوَىexcept رَاحَةٍa palm تَرْتَدُّdraws back أَوْor عِدَةٍa promise تُلْوَىis evaded
And I spent my life seeking her favor, but gained
only a palm that draws back, or a promise evaded.
وَأَصْبَحْتُand I became مَغْلُوبَoverpowered in الرَّشَادِsound judgment وَقَلَّمَاand rarely
يَعُودُreturns رَشِيداًprudent صَالِحَsound in الْعَقْلِmind مَنْone who يَغْوَىstrays
And I have lost command of sound judgment; seldom
does one who strays return prudent and sound of mind.
خَضَعْتُI submitted لأَحْكَامِto the decrees of الْهَوَىlove وَلَطَالَمَاand many a time
أَبَيْتُI refused فَلَمْso did not أَخْضَعْI submit لِمَنْto one who يَهَبُbestows الْجَدْوَىbounty
I bowed to love's decrees, though time and again
I had refused to bow to one who bestows bounty.
وَإِنِّيand I indeed امْرُؤٌa man لَوْلاbut for الْهَوَىlove مَاnot وَجَدْتَنِيyou would find me
أَدِينُI submit لِغَيْرِto anyone other than اللَّهِGod أَوْor أَرْهَبُI fear الْعَدْوَىaggression
And I am a man whom, but for love, you would never find
submitting to any but God, or fearing aggression.
بَعِيدُfar-reaching مَنَاطِin the scope of الْهَمِّambition تُرْهَبُis feared صَوْلَتِيmy onslaught
إِذَاwhen مَا(emphasis) دَجَاgrows dark خَطْبٌa calamity وَبَادِرَتِيand my impetuous charge تُرْوَىis recounted
My ambition reaches far; my onslaught is feared
when calamity grows dark, and my impetuous charge is recounted.
لِسَانِيmy tongue خَلُوبٌbeguiling فِيin الْجِدَالِdebate وَصَارِمِيand my sharp sword
رَسُوبٌdeep-piercing وَرَأْيِيand my counsel مِنْthan سَمَاءِthe sky of الضُّحَىforenoon أَضْوَىbrighter
My tongue is beguiling in debate, and my sharp sword
sinks deep; my counsel is brighter than the forenoon sky.
وَعِنْدِيand I possess إِذَاwhen مَا(emphasis) الْحَرْبُwar أَلْقَتْcasts off قِنَاعَهَاits veil
عَزِيمَةُthe resolve of لَيْثٍa lion مَاnot تَهِرُّsnarls وَمَاand not تُعْوَىis made to howl
And when war casts off its veil, I possess
a lion's resolve that neither snarls nor is made to howl;
وَحِلْمُand the forbearance of كَرِيمٍa noble man يَمْلأُfills الْغَيْظُrage قَلْبَهُhis heart
فَيَكْظِمُهُso he restrains it وَالْحِلْمُand forbearance أَقْرَبُcloser لِلتَّقْوَىto piety
and a noble man's forbearance: rage fills his heart,
but he restrains it, and forbearance is closer to piety;
وَعِفَّةُand the purity of نَفْسٍa soul لاnot تُزَنُّis suspected بِرِيبَةٍof wrongdoing
وَجُودٌand generosity بِهِthrough it ظَلَّتْhave continued عُفَاةُseekers of النَّدَىbounty تَرْوَىto be quenched
and the purity of a soul never suspected of wrongdoing;
and generosity that keeps seekers of bounty's thirst quenched.
وَلِيand I have هِمَّةٌan ambition لَوْلاbut for الْعَوَائِقُthe obstacles مَهَّدَتْwould have prepared
يَدُthe hand of الْمَجْدِglory فِيin أُفْقِthe horizon of السَّمَاءِheaven لَهَاfor it مَثْوَىa dwelling
And I have an ambition for which, but for obstacles, there would have been prepared
by glory's hand a dwelling on heaven's horizon.
بَلَغْتُI attained بِهَاthrough it بَعْضَsome of الْمُنَىmy wishes غَيْرَexcept أَنَّنِيthat I
جَدِيرٌworthy بِأَنْof أَحْوِيI attain بِهَاthrough it كُلَّall مَاthat أَهْوَىI desire
Through it I have attained some wishes, yet I
deserve to gain through it everything I desire.
فَإِنْso if سَادَgained eminence غَيْرِيsomeone other than me بِالْجُدُودِthrough ancestors فَإِنَّنِيthen I indeed
بِهِمْthrough them وَبِفَضْلِيand through my merit رِشْتُI fletched سَهْمِيmy arrow فَمَاso it did not أَشْوَىmiss the vital mark
So if another gained eminence through his ancestors, then I,
through them and my own merit, have feathered my arrow, so it missed no vital mark.
وَلَيْسَand is not عُلُوُّthe elevation of النَّفْسِthe soul بِالْجَدِّthrough ancestry وَحْدَهُalone
وَلَيْسَand is not كَمَالُthe perfection of الْمَرْءِa person فِيin شَرَفِthe nobility of الْمَأْوَىthe dwelling
Nor does a soul's elevation come from ancestry alone,
nor does a man's perfection lie in the nobility of his dwelling.
إِذَاif حَرَّكَتْنِيstirs me نَحْوَtoward أَرْضٍa land وَتِيرَةٌa need
رَكِبْتُI mounted لَهَاfor it عَزْمِيmy resolve وَإِنْand though بَعُدَis distant الْمَهْوَىthe destination
If a need stirs me toward a land,
I mount my resolve to reach it, though the destination be far.
فَإِنْso if كَانَhas سَوَّىmade equal الدَّهْرُtime بَيْنِيbetween me وَبَيْنَand between مَنْthose whom
أَرَىI see مِنْamong بَنِيهِits sons فِيin الْحُظُوظِfortune فَمَاthen it has not سَوَّىmade equal
And if time has equated me with those
I see among its sons in fortune, it has not made us equal.
بَرِئْتُI am free مِنَof الْغِلِّrancor الَّذِيwhich أَصْبَحَتْhave become بِهِthrough it
قُلُوبُهُمُtheir hearts مِنْfrom شَرِّthe evil of مَاwhat حَمَلَتْthey have borne تَدْوَىgrow diseased
I am free of the rancor that has left
their hearts ailing from the evil they carry.
نَصَحْتُI was sincere وَغَشُّواand they deceived وَاسْتَقَمْتُand I was upright وَرَاوَغُواand they evaded
وَهَلْand is مَنْone who هَدَىguided بَيْنَamong الأَنَامِmankind كَمَنْlike one who أَغْوَىled astray
I was sincere, while they deceived; I was upright, while they evaded.
And among mankind, is one who guides like one who leads astray?
وَإِنِّيand I indeed إِذَاwhen مَا(emphasis) الْخَطْبُcalamity أَمْقَرَgrew bitter طَعْمُهُits taste
نَبَذْتُI cast بِهِagainst it رَأْيَاًa plan أَلَذَّmore delicious مِنَthan السَّلْوَىhoney
And I, whenever calamity's taste turns bitter,
cast at it a plan sweeter than honey.
أَصَبْتُI struck كُلَىthe kidneys of الأَحْدَاثِcalamities حَتَّىuntil تَرَكْتُهَاI left them
عَلَىon جَمَرَاتِthe embers of الْغَيْظِrage تَأْمُورُهَاtheir heart يُشْوَىis roasted
I struck calamities in the kidneys, until I left them
with their heart roasting on the embers of rage.
وَصُغْتُand I fashioned مِنَfrom السِّحْرِmagic الْحَلالِlawful قَصَائِدَاًpoems
تَظَلُّremains بِهَاthrough them نَفْسُthe soul of الْمُعِيدِthe reciter لَهَاof them نَشْوَىintoxicated
And I fashioned poems from lawful magic,
that keep the soul of their reciter intoxicated.
فَمَاfor not قَيَّدَتْنِيhas bound me لَفْظَةٌa word دُونَwithout حِكْمةٍwisdom
وَلاnor غَرَّنِيhas deceived me قَوْلٌa saying فَمِلْتُso I inclined إِلَىtoward الدَّعْوَىboastful claims
For no word lacking wisdom has ever bound me,
nor has a saying deceived me into inclining toward boastful claims.
وَيَاand oh طَالَمَاhow often رُمْتُI sought الْقَوَافِيrhymes فَأَقْبَلَتْso they came
سِرَاعاًswiftly فَلاso not أَرْوَىArwa ذَكَرْتُI mentioned وَلاnor حُزْوَىHuzwa
And oh, how often I sought rhymes, and they came
swiftly, though I mentioned neither Arwa nor Huzwa.
فَلاso let not يَحْذُوَنَّever imitate النَّاسُpeople حَذْوَthe pattern of بَلاغَتِيmy eloquence
فَأَقْرَبُfor the nearest مَاthat which فِيin شَأْوِهَاits course الْغَايَةُthe goal الْقُصْوَىthe farthest
So let people not follow in my eloquence's footsteps,
for the nearest point in its course is the farthest goal.
