Words grew drunk on the wine of your speech.

And glances voiced your innermost thoughts.

O lovely statue, but for pious restraint, alike would be

In loving her, the ruthless killers and the preachers.

What ails me? I gave you my affection, and you repaid me

With a fire whose smokeless flame burns between my ribs.

Why did you not show mercy when you held me in your power? For often

The generous man has shown mercy, though his heart was angry.

    فَقُلُوبُهُمْ أَبَداً عَلَيَّ غِلاظُ

    For indeed I have forsaken most of my clan to come to you;

So their hearts are ever harsh toward me.

And you banished sleep from my eye, so it has no

    Morsel save tears and sleeplessness.

All this, though for none but you have arrows been stained

With my blood, nor have any other glances ruled over me.

Then why do you listen to what is brought

About me to you by the envious, swaggering boor?

So unite with a lover who has committed no sin

In the faith of loving you; passion is fidelity.

He loves you so deeply that his nature is not swayed

In his love for you by hurt or provocation.

Restless in bed, his eyelids are never visited

By the drowsiness of sleep; and lovers stay awake.

He bears such suffering that, if they bore even part of it,

Those devoted to love and passion would perish.

So when he weeps, they spend spring amid the flow

Of his tears; and when he sighs, they spend summer.

This is the love for which too narrow proved

Those breasts; and few were its faithful keepers.
