Was it a breeze that passed by night with a breath of laurel,

or a messenger who brought Hind's greeting?

Its breaths enraptured me, as though I

reeled, drunk from a draught of brandy.

And one possessed by passion is ever enraptured,

following longing across plain and mountain crag.

Long have I yearned for home, but

how far from Egypt is one who dwells in Kandy!

How lovely the Nile, when it flows and displays

the sheen of a sword and the shimmer of its watered pattern.

The branches sway along its two banks

    like maidens trailing embroidered silk.

The hand of the clouds has decked them with necklaces

more splendid than any necklace or jeweled strand.

How could the doves not sing above it,

when from it they are served sugar's choicest wine?

It is the range for my arrows and the playground of my horses,

my family's sanctuary and the station of my banner.

Whenever my soul pictures it before my eyes,

longing strikes sparks in my heart with a firestick.

    مِثْلُ مَا عِنْدَهُ مِنَ الشَّوْقِ عِنْدِي

    There I have a friend who is dear to me;

I feel the same longing he feels.

I yearn for him, yet my heart

lies captive to separation, surrounded by troops.

So convey from me to him a sincere greeting,

and look kindly on my plight, O Effendi.

I am, by God, smitten with love for him,

wherever I roam between India and Sindh.

Indeed, my longing for him runs faster

than Sulayk, while reunion moves as slowly as Find.

I ask Time for the blessing of nearness to him,

yet it is miserly with favors and bestows no bounty.

Had anyone but Time sought to wrong me, I would have taken the field,

brandishing my blade atop a dun steed.

I cannot prevail over Time, although

I rout my foes with the strength of my forearm.
