The soul begins as a drop, distilled

By desire fashioned by a hidden temperament.

    Loins cast it into wombs,

And wombs enclosed it after the loins.

Then a descent brought it to rest, followed by

    Movements, after which comes stillness.

Thus at one time it is in the realm of the un-

seen, and at another it is in a realm like that.

    وَهْيَ مَا بَيْنَ ذَاكَ حَيٌّ مَهِينُ

    Its beginning and its end are the same;

And in between it is a lowly living being.

Why, then, weep for an abode

Whose courtyard is filled with calamities?

Men perish in their greed for it,

And it is greed brought about by madness.

Aristotle was bewildered by it long ago,

And Plato the sage lamented it.
