تَوَازَنَcame into balance الصَّيْفُthe summer والشِّتَاءُand the winter
واعْتَدَلَand became temperate الصُّبْحُthe morning والْمَساءُand the evening
Summer and winter have come into balance,
Summer and winter balanced out,
And morning and evening have grown mild.
Morning and evening grew equable,
واصْطَلَحَتْand made peace بَعْدَafter طُولِa long period of عَتْبٍreproach
بَيْنَهُمَاbetween them الأَرْضُthe earth والسَّمَاءُand the sky
And after long reproach, peace has been made
After long estrangement, the earth and sky
Between earth and sky.
Made their peace.
فَلاso no اصْطِحارٌgoing into the open وَلاand no اكْتِنَانٌtaking shelter
وَلاand no ابْتِرادٌseeking coolness وَلاand no اصْطِلاءُwarming by a fire
So no need to seek the open air or shelter,
No scorching heat nor numbing cold,
Nor to seek coolness or warm oneself by a fire.
No bareness and no overcast.
تَبْتَهِجُrejoices العَيْنُthe eye فيin رِياضٍgardens
أَنْضَرَهاmade them lush الماءُthe water وَالْهَواءُand the air
The eye rejoices in gardens
The eyes delight in meadows
Made lush by water and air:
Water and air have turned green.
مَنَابِتٌplanting grounds زَرْعُهاtheir crops بَهِيجٌlovely
وَغَيْضَةٌand a grove ماؤُهاits water رَوَاءُabundant and refreshing
Plots whose crops are lovely,
Its crops are lush, its water sweet,
And a grove whose water is abundant and refreshing.
With birdsong in its bowers
لِلطَّيْرِfor the birds فيin أَيْكِهاits thickets هَدِيلٌcooing
وَلِلصَّباand for the east wind بَيْنَهاamong them مُكَاءُwhistling
The birds coo in its thickets,
And the breath of morn in its air.
And the east wind whistles among them.
The sun slips out of sight,
تَوَارَتِvanished الشَّمْسُthe sun عَنْfrom ذراهَاtheir heights
وَشَبَّand flared مِنْfrom زَهْرِهَاtheir blossoms سَناءُradiance
The sun has vanished from their heights,
And the dew forms pearls.
And radiance has flared from their blossoms.
Morning and noon and evening
فَالصُّبْحُso the morning وَالظُّهْرُand noon وَالْعَشَايَاand the evenings
وَالْوَهْنُand the late-night hour مِنْof لَيْلِهاtheir night سَوَاءُalike
So morning, noon, and evenings,
Melt into its gentle night.
And the late hours of their night are all alike:
No mist or cloud,
فَلاso no ضَبَابٌfog وَلاand no غَمَامٌclouds
وَلاand no ظَلاَمٌdarkness وَلاand no ضِياءُlight
Neither fog nor clouds,
No darkness and no light.
Nor darkness nor light.
Rise, and seize youth while we can,
فَقُمْso rise بِناwith us نَغْتَنِمْlet us seize شَبَاباًyouth
وَلَذَّةًand pleasure بَعْدَهاafter it فَنَاءُpassing away
So rise with us; let us seize youth
And rapture ere decay.
And pleasure, after which comes death.
Do not brood on wishing—
وَلاand do not تُطِلْprolong فِكْرَةَthe thought of التَّمَنِّيwishing
فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it الْحُكْمُthe judgment وَالْقَضَاءُand the decree
And do not dwell long on wishful thinking,
Decree and fate have sway.
For it is the judgment and the decree.
All men seek their goal,
يُرِيْدُwants كُلُّevery امْرِئٍperson مُنَاهُhis wishes
وَيَفْعَلُand does اللهُGod ماwhat يَشاءُHe wills
Every man wants his wishes fulfilled,
And God does as He will.
And God does what He wills.
