O drowsy-eyed one, how long will you sleep?

You kept me awake for love of you, while all the world slept.

This night is almost at its end,

Yet my eye knows no sweetness of sleep.

Alas for me, for the sanctuary's gazelle! He

Has made me drink death's bitterness by turning away.

He grows angry when I say “Ah!”—but is

My saying “Ah!”, O my beloved, forbidden?

His letters do not come in succession, nor do his messengers

Come, nor does his phantom pay even a fleeting visit.

For God's sake, pity an eye that sleep has forsaken

Because of you, and a heart that passion has worn away.

Separation has lasted long since you left, and gone is

The gladness of life; wretched is my abode.

I feel relief when the east wind's breeze passes,

And in it are both healing and sickness for me.

Would that I were a letter speeding along the wire,

Or a feather among the doves' inner flight feathers,

So I might reach Egypt in an instant

And there fulfill the duty of fidelity in love.

    فَكُلُّ يَوْمٍ مَرَّ بِي أَلْفُ عَامْ

    My lord, the bitterness of separation has lasted long;

For every day that passes over me is a thousand years.

I look around me and see no companion

Save throngs and horses standing still,

And a sentry shouting in the darkness:

“Go back! There is no way ahead!”

    وَيَنْقَضِي النُّورُ وَيَأْتِي الظَّلامْ

    Dawn is greeted, and darkness passes away;

The light fades, and darkness comes.

Yet no letter from a beloved has come,

Nor does a true friend return my greeting.

On a hill in the land of Dobruja,

With nothing there but small birds and owls.

Behind us lies the sea, and before us

The dark mass of a grim, vast army.

Such is my state—may separation never strike you!

How, then, do you fare in our absence, O noble one?
