All life is destined to end.

    So love your life, or hate it;

and hoard your life, or spend it freely:

all things are bound for decay.

Where are those who cleaved the seas

and built the city of pillars?

They ruled the lowlands and the highlands,

the cities and the desert lands.

But where are the leaders of delegations,

and where are the masters of combat—

    the feasters, the spear-thrusters,

    the speakers in every gathering,

the dispellers of distress, and the

    pardoners of people's sins?

But where are the craftsmen of verse—

    stately—and of peerless words,

    like the Wayward Poet, or

    Quss ibn Sāʿidah al-Iyādī?

    Time toyed with their company

and cast them into every valley.

So it is as though they had lingered

    only as whiteness amid blackness.
