لاno فَارِسَhorseman الْيَوْمَtoday يَحْمِيguards السَّرْحَthe grazing herds بِالْوَادِيin the valley
طَاحَfelled الرَّدَىdeath بِشِهَابِthe blazing star of الْحَرْبِbattle وَالنَّادِيand the assembly
No horseman today guards the grazing herds in the valley.
No knight today defends the plain,
Death has felled the blazing star of battle and assembly.
The best have fallen, glory wanes.
مَاتَdied الَّذِيthe one whom تَرْهَبُfear الأَقْرَانُthe rivals صَوْلَتَهُhis onslaught
وَيَتَّقِيand shuns بَأْسَهُhis might الضِّرْغَامَةُthe lion الْعَادِيcharging
He is dead whose onslaught his rivals feared,
He at whose might peers quaked is gone,
And whose might the charging lion shunned.
No more the foe his wrath shall face.
هَانَتْbecame worthless لِمَيْتَتِهِat his death الدُّنْيَاthe world وَزَهَّدَنَاand made us lose desire
فَرْطُexcess of الأَسَىgrief بَعْدَهُafter him فِيfor الْمَاءِwater والزَّادِand food
At his death the world grew worthless, and we lost our desire—
Since he has died, worldly wares are vain,
Through overwhelming grief after him—for water and food.
Grief drowns us like a flooding rain.
هَلْis there لِلْمَكارِمِfor noble deeds مَنْanyone who يُحْيِيrevives مَنَاسِكَهَاtheir rites
أَمْor لِلضَّلالَةِfor error بَعْدَafter الْيَوْمِtoday مِنْany هَادِيguide
Is there anyone to revive the rites of noble deeds,
Who will revive dead chivalry?
Or, after today, any guide out of error?
Or guide us rightly when astray?
جَفَّdried up النَّدَىbounty وانْقَضَىand ended عُمْرُthe life of الْجَدَاlargesse وَسَرَىand spread
حُكْمُthe decree of الرَّدَىdeath بَيْنَamong أَرْواحٍsouls وَأَجْسَادِand bodies
Bounty has dried up, largesse's life has ended, and there has spread
Dew dried, our prime is past, and time
Death's decree among souls and bodies.
Rules o’er both body and soul’s clime.
فَلْتَمْرَحِso let them frolic الْخَيْلُthe horses لَهْوَاًidly فِيat مَقَاوِدِهَاtheir tethers
وَلْتَصْدَإِand let them rust الْبِيضُthe bright swords مُلْقَاةًcast aside بِأَغْمَادِin sheaths
So let the horses frolic idly at their tethers,
Let steeds in stalls neglected neigh,
And let the bright swords rust, cast aside in sheaths.
And razors rust in sheaths all day.
مَضَىdeparted وَخَلَّفَنِيand left me فِيat سِنِّthe age of سَابِعَةٍseventh
لاnot يَرْهَبُfears الْخَصْمُthe foe إِبْرَاقِيmy lightning وإِرْعَادِيand my thunder
He departed and left me at the age of seven;
He left me, still a tender boy
The foe fears neither my lightning nor my thunder.
Who had not learned to roar and fight.
إِذَاwhen تَلَفَّتُّI look around لَمْdid not أَلْمَحْglimpse أَخَاa companion of ثِقَةٍtrust
يَأْوِيturns for refuge إِلَيَّto me ولاnor يَسْعَىhastens لإِنْجَادِيto my rescue
When I look around, I glimpse no trusted companion
No trusted friend or brother kind
Who turns to me or hastens to my aid.
Is there, my needs to ease or find.
فَالْعَيْنُso the eye لَيْسَthere is no لَهَاfor it مِنْfrom دَمْعِهَاits tears وَزَرٌrefuge
والْقَلْبُand the heart لَيْسَthere is no لَهُfor it مِنْfrom حُزْنِهِits sorrow فَادِيransomer
So the eye has no refuge from its tears,
My eyes can weep till sight shall fail,
And the heart has none to ransom it from its sorrow.
No comfort for my heart’s dark vale.
فَإِنْso if أَكُنْI am عِشْتُI lived فَرْدَاًalone بَيْنَamong آصِرَتِيmy kin
فَهَاthen behold أَنَاI الْيَوْمَtoday فَرْدٌalone بَيْنَamong أَنْدَادِيmy peers
For if I have lived alone among my kin,
Always alone, no equals near,
Then here I am today, alone among my peers.
Now solitary without peer.
بَلَغْتُI attained مِنْfrom فَضْلِthe bounty of رَبِّيmy Lord مَاwhat غَنِيتُI became self-sufficient بِهِthrough it
عَنْof كُلِّevery قَارٍsettled one مِنَamong الأَمْلاكِthe kings أَوْor بَادِيa desert-dweller
Through my Lord's bounty I gained what made me independent
God’s grace has been enough for me,
Of every king, whether settled or nomadic.
All else compared is poverty.
فَمَاso not مَدَدْتُI stretched out يَدِيmy hand إِلَّاexcept لِمَنْحِto bestow يَدٍa favor
ولاnor سَعَتْhastened قَدَميmy foot إِلَّاexcept لإِسْعَادِto give aid
So I have stretched out my hand only to bestow a favor,
I stretch my hand out but to give,
Nor has my foot hastened except to give aid.
Step forth but unfortunate to save.
تَبِعْتُI followed نَهْجَthe path of أَبِيmy father فَضْلاًin virtue وَمَحْمِيَةًand zeal for honor
حَتَّىuntil بَرَعْتُI excelled وَكَانَand was الْفَضْلُthe credit لِلْبَادِيto the pioneer
I followed my father's path in virtue and zeal for honor,
I followed in my father’s way,
Until I excelled, yet the credit belonged to the pioneer.
Excelled him at the close of day.
أَبِيmy father وَمَنْand who كَأَبِيlike my father فِيamong الْحَيِّthe clan نَعْلَمُهُwe know him

My father—and whom in the clan do we know like my father?—
My sire, and whoso was as he,
Was most faithful and most noble in promise and threat.
Most faithful to each promise made,
مُهَذَّبُrefined النَّفْسِthe soul غَرَّاءٌradiant شَمائِلُهُhis qualities

Refined in soul, radiant in his qualities,
Of gentle soul and noble mien,
Far-reaching in glory, a scaler of highlands.
From lowly wiles and envy clean.
قَدْindeed كَانَwas لِيfor me وَزَراًa refuge آوِيI take refuge إِلَيْهِto him إِذَاwhen
غَاضَreceded الْمَعِينُthe flowing water وَجَفَّand dried up الزَّرْعُthe crops بِالْوَادِيin the valley
He was a refuge for me, to whom I turned when
For me a pillar of support
The flowing water receded and the crops dried up in the valley.
When arid grew the field and court.
لاnot يَسْتَبِدُّacts unilaterally بِرَأْيٍon a judgment قَبْلَbefore تَبْصِرَةٍcareful consideration

He never acts on his own judgment before reflection,
No judgment made he rashly then,
Nor embarks on a task before making ready.
Nor moved till the path was clear again.
تَرَاهُyou see him ذَاpossessing أُهْبَةٍreadiness فِيin كُلِّevery نَائِبَةٍcalamity

You see him prepared for every calamity,
In threat’ning test, as lions may,
Like a lion in ambush, watching for prey.
For prey unwearied night and day.
