خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends هَلْis it that? طَالَgrew long الدُّجَىthe night-darkness أَمْor تَقَيَّدَتْbecame fettered
كَوَاكِبُهُits stars أَمْor ضَلَّstrayed عَنْfrom نَهْجِهِits course الْغَدُtomorrow
My two friends, has the night grown long, or have
Its stars been shackled, or has tomorrow strayed from its course?
أَبِيتُI spend the night حَزِيناًsorrowful فِيin سَرَنْدِيبَSerendib سَاهِراًawake
طِوَالَthroughout اللَّيَالِيthe nights وَالْخَلِيُّونَand the carefree هُجَّدُasleep
I spend the night sorrowful in Serendib, awake,
Through the long nights, while the carefree sleep.
أُحَاوِلُI strive for مَاwhat لاnot أَسْتَطِيعُI can طِلابَهُits pursuit
كَذَاthus النَّفْسُthe soul تَهْوَىdesires غَيْرَother than مَاwhat تَمْلِكُpossesses الْيَدُthe hand
I seek what I cannot pursue;
Thus the soul desires what the hand does not possess.
إِذَاwhen خَطَرَتْwafted past مِنْfrom نَحْوِthe direction of حُلْوَانَHelwan نَسْمَةٌa breeze
نَزَتْleapt بَيْنَwithin قَلْبِيmy heart شُعْلَةٌa flame تَتَوَقَّدُblazes
When a breeze wafts from the direction of Helwan,
A flame leaps within my heart, blazing.
وَهَيْهَاتَand how far off! مَاno بَعْدَafter الشَّبِيبَةِyouth مَوْسِمٌa season
يَطِيبُis sweet وَلاand no بَعْدَafter الْجَزِيرَةِal-Jazira (the island) مَعْهَدُa familiar haunt
And alas, no season after youth
Is sweet, nor any familiar haunt after al-Jazira.
شَبَابٌyouth وَإِخْوَانٌand friends رُزِئْتُI was bereft of وِدَادهُمْtheir affection
وَكُلُّand every امْرِئٍman فِيin الدَّهْرِtime يَشْقَىsuffers وَيَسْعَدُand is happy
Youth, and friends whose affection I have lost—
And every man in life knows misery and happiness.
وَمَاand not كُنْتُI was أَخْشَىI fear أَنْthat أَعِيشَI live بِغُرْبَةٍin exile
يُعَلِّلُنِيconsoles me فِيهَاin it خُوَيْدِمُa little servant أَسْوَدُblack
And I never feared that I would live in exile,
Where a little black servant consoles me.
