فُؤَادِيmy heart وَالْهَوَىand love قَدَحٌa cup وَخَمْرُand wine
أَمَاis there not فيin ذَاكَthat لِيfor me طَرَبٌrapture وَسُكْرُand intoxication
My heart and love are a cup and wine;
My heart and passion are a goblet and wine,
Is there not rapture and intoxication for me in that?
Of that I have rapture and inebriation.
يَلُومُونِيthey blame me عَلَىfor كَلَفِيmy passion بِلَيْلَىfor Layla
وَلَيْلَىand Layla فيin سَمَاءِthe sky of الْحُسْنِbeauty بَدْرُa full moon
They blame me for my passion for Layla,
They blame me for my infatuation with Layla,
And Layla is a full moon in beauty's sky.
While Layla is the full moon in the sky of beauty.
لَهَاshe has خَدٌّa cheek بِهِin it لِلْحُسْنِof beauty وَرْدٌa rose
وَلَحْظٌand a glance فِيهِin it لِلْمَلَكَيْنِof the two angels سِحْرُmagic
She has a cheek bearing beauty's rose,
She has a cheek, in which beauty is a rose,
And a glance holding the two angels' magic.
And a glance, in which is magic for the angels.
تَضِنُّshe is sparing عَلَيَّtoward me بِالتَّسْلِيمِwith greetings تِيهاًout of pride
وَهَلْand is there فِيin سُنَّةِthe custom of التَّسْلِيمِgreeting وِزْرُsin
She grudges me a greeting out of pride,
She is coy with me in her acquiescence, wandering,
And is there any sin in the custom of greeting?
Is there in the way of acquiescence any blame?
يَلُوحُgleams جَبِينُهَاher forehead فيbetween طُرَّتَيْهَاher two forelocks
كَماjust as أَوْفَىrose into view عَلَىover الظَّلْمَاءِthe darkness فَجْرُdawn
Her forehead gleams between her two forelocks,
Her forehead gleams from beneath her veil,
As dawn rises over the darkness.
As the dawn shines through the darkness.
وَتَبْسِمُand she smiles عَنْrevealing جُمَانٍpearls فِيin عَقِيقٍcarnelian

And she smiles, revealing pearls amid carnelian,
And she smiles from perfect rubies,
Which, in the judgment of taste, is called a mouth.
It is said by the judgment of taste, they are lips.
