My anguish has wasted me, and sleeplessness has worn me down.

And the dizzying haze of sorrow has shrouded me.

For the blackness of night never ends,

And the whiteness of dawn is not to be expected.

No companion hears my complaint, and no

News arrives, and no phantom passes by.

Between walls and a tightly shut door,

Whenever the jailer moves it, it creaks.

    He paces before it until

A faint sound from me reaches him; then he stands still.

Whenever I move about to attend to a need,

The darkness says, 'Wait! Do not move about.'

I search out the thing I seek, yet do not

Find the thing, nor does my soul find rest.

Darkness, with not a single star in it,

Except breaths that cast out sparks.

    إِنَّ حُسْنَ الصَّبْر مِفْتَاحُ الظَّفَرْ

    So be patient, O soul, until you triumph;

Indeed, noble patience is the key to victory.

It is but breaths that pass away, and a man,

Wherever he may be, is a captive of fate.
