I wept for Ali when he went his way,

with an eye in whose tears the soul almost flows.

And I know full well that my grief cannot do justice

to my loss; yet there is no path to patience.

And how can I keep my heart from its sorrows,

when even the least of what I endure cracks rock?

    وَهَلْ لاِمْرِئٍ لَمْ يَبْكِ فِي الحُزْنِ مِنْ عُذْرِ

    They blame me for going too far in weeping;

and is there any excuse for a man who has not wept in grief?

If a man neither rejoices in blessing nor grieves

in misery, neither benefit nor harm can be expected of him.

And, were it not for God's allotment among mortals, I would not

endure; yet we journey by night toward an end.

Indeed, my affliction has been eased, though it has loomed

over my soul, by what I hope for at the appointed time of the Gathering.
