وَدَارَيْتُand I concealed إِلَّاexcept مَاwhat يَنِمُّbetrays زَفِيرُa sigh
I feigned indifference, save for what my heart conceals,
And concealed my feelings, save what a sigh betrays.
وَهَلْand can يَسْتَطِيعُis able الْمَرْءُthe man كِتْمَانَconcealment of أَمْرِهِhis affair

And can a man conceal his plight,
With its searing anguish and blaze within his breast?
فَيَاso, ah! قَاتَلَmay smite اللهُGod الْهَوَىpassion مَاhow أَشَدَّهُsevere it is

Ah, may God smite passion—how harsh it is
Upon a man when it finds him alone and attacks!

The soul yields to it, though proudly defiant,
And the heart quails before it, though patient.
نَبَذْتُI cast aside لَهُfor it رُمْحِيmy spear وَأَغْمَدْتُand I sheathed صَارِمِيmy keen sword

For it I cast aside my spear and sheathed my keen sword,
And checked my colt, though desire was abundant.
وَأَصْبَحْتُand I became مَفْلُولَblunted in الْمَخَالِبِthe claws بَعْدَمَاafter

And I was left with blunted claws, after
I had pounced, my roar resounding in east and west.
فَيَاso, O! لَسَرَاةِto the nobles of الْقَومِthe people دَعْوَةُa plea عَائِذٍof one seeking refuge
أَمَاis there not مِنْany سَمِيعٍone who hears فِيكُمُamong you فَيُجِيرُand so grants refuge
So, O nobles of the people—a plea from one seeking refuge!
Is there no one among you who hears and grants refuge?
لَطَالَgrew so long عَلَيَّfor me اللَّيْلُthe night حَتىuntil مَلِلْتُهُI tired of it

The night grew so long for me that I wearied of it,
Yet in my experience, as far as I remember, it was short.
أَلاah! فَرَعَىso may preserve اللهُGod الصِّبَاboyhood مَاhow أَبَرَّهُkind it was
وَحَيَّاand bless شَبَاباًyouth مَرَّpassed وَهْوَwhile it was نَضِيرُfresh
Ah, may God guard boyhood—how kind it was!
And bless the youth that passed while still fresh.
إِذِwhen الْعَيْشُlife أَفْوَافٌpatterned fabrics تَرِفُّflutter ظِلالُهُits shades

When life was patterned finery, its shades fluttering
Over us, and loyalty's flowing stream was sweet.
وَإِذْand when نَحْنُwe فيماamid بَيْنَamong إِخْوَانِcompanions of لَذَّةٍpleasure

And when we were among companions in pleasure,
With traits in which there was nothing blameworthy.
تَدُورُcirculates عَلَيْنَاamong us الْكَأْسُthe cup بَيْنَamong مَلاعِبٍplaces of play
بِهَاin them اللَّهْوُpleasure خِدْنٌa close companion وَالشَّبَابُand youth سَمِيرُan evening companion
The cup passed around among us in places of play,
Where pleasure was a friend and youth an evening companion.
فَأَلْحَاظُنَاso our glances بَيْنَbetween النُّفُوسِsouls رَسَائِلٌmessages
وَرَيْحَانُنَاand our basil بَيْنَamong الْكُؤُوسِthe cups سَفِيرُan envoy
So our glances were messages between souls,
And our basil was an envoy among the cups.
عَقَدْنَاwe bound جَنَاحَيْthe two wings of لَيْلِناour night بِنَهَارِنَاto our day
وَطِرْنَاand we flew مَعَwith اللَّذَّاتِpleasures حَيْثُwherever تَطِيرُthey fly
We bound the two wings of our night to our day,
And flew with pleasures wherever they flew.
وَقُلْنَاand we said لِساقِينَاto our cupbearer أَدِرْهَاpass it round فَإِنَّمَاfor only
بَقَاءُthe remaining life of الْفَتَىthe man بَعْدَafter الشَّبَابِyouth يَسِيرُbrief
And told our cupbearer: Pass it round, for
A man's life after youth is but brief.
فَطَافَso he circulated بِهَاit شَمْسِيَّةًsunlike لَهَبِيَّةًflame-like

So he passed it round, sunlike and fiery,
With scores to settle with the minds of men.
إِذَاwhen مَاever (emphatic) شَرِبْنَاهَاwe drank it أَقَمْنَاwe stayed مَكَانَنَاin our place

Whenever we drank it, we stayed where we were,
And the wide earth kept whirling with us.
وَكَمْand many a لَيْلَةٍnight أَفْنَيْتُI exhausted عُمْرَthe lifespan of ظَلامِهَاits darkness

And many a night I exhausted the life of its darkness,
Until dawn's gray hairs appeared within it.

I occupied my heart there and delighted my gaze,
And soothed my hearing, while my fingertips remained pure.
صَنَعْتُI acted بِهَاin it صُنْعَthe conduct of الْكَرِيمِthe noble man بِأَهْلِهِwith his family
وَجِيرَتِهِand his neighbors والْغَادِرُونَand the faithless كَثِيرُmany
There I acted as a noble man acts with his family
And his neighbors, though the faithless are many.
فَمَاso nothing رَاعَنَاstartled us إِلَّاexcept حَفِيفُthe rustling of حَمَائِمٍdoves

Answering companions of theirs in leafy thickets,
Whose whistling there followed their plaintive calls.

Delicate creatures, knowing no hardship of life,
Nor how the vicissitudes of time revolve.

Their heads rest upon cushions
Of feathers, both long plumes and new-grown down.

As though upon their flanks, in their woven plumage,
Were amulets with no thongs tied to them.

Leaving one grove and entering another,
Gladdened by ample shade and a pool.

When the sun woos them, they shimmer, as though
Upon their two sides lay fine brocade and silk.
فَلَمَّاthen when رَأَيْتُI saw الصُّبْحَthe dawn قَدْalready رَفَّgleamed جِيدُهُits neck

Then, when I saw the dawn, its neck aglow,
And no veils of woven darkness remained,
خَرَجْتُI went out أَجُرُّtrailing الذَّيْلَthe hem تِيهاًproudly وَإِنَّمَاand only

I went out trailing my hem in pride; and it is only
When a man is chaste despite his power that he may boast.
وَلِيand I have شِيمَةٌa disposition تَأْبَىspurns الدَّنَايَاbase deeds وَعَزْمَةٌand a resolve

And I have a nature that spurns base deeds, and a resolve
That turns back the army's vast host as it surges.

When I travel, the earth beneath us
Is a roaming-ground for my colt, and fortresses are homes.
فَلاso no عَجَبٌwonder إِنْif لَمْnot يَصُرْنِيَconfines me مَنْزِلٌa dwelling

So no wonder if no dwelling confines me,
For the eagles of the air have no nests.

By evening travel over long distances, or early starts;

From earnest striving until its tasks are done.

It has an ear that hears beyond the unseen,
And an eye that sees what no keen-sighted person sees.

Of me; and keeping faith befits one such as I.

And I became envied for my majesty, as though I were
A prince over every soul in this age.

When I charge, time reins in its excesses,
And if I speak, breasts choke upon their hearts.

Whose star shines with magnificent radiance.

So had I lived in that bygone age of eloquence,
Jarwal and Jarir would have acknowledged my superiority.

'O neighbor of our two houses, your father is jealous.'

It has not harmed me that I came after them,
While my excellence is renowned among all people.

Ah, how often the first fails to win,
And the last outstrips the steeds that raced ahead.
