وَكَيْفَ أَوْدَعْتُكَ الثَّرَى بِيَدِي
How has Death folded you away, my son?
How did death wrap you, my son,
And how have I laid you in the earth with my own hand?
And how did I bury you with my own hands,

Ah, my liver, O Ali, now you are gone! If only
If only after you, O Ali, my liver
the cry 'Ah, my liver!' could quench the burning thirst.
Could still secrete bile, if only after you.

Your loss has drawn the bones from me and driven
Losing you sapped the bones right out of me
patience away from me, and sapped my upper arm's strength.
And peeled all patience off of my backbone,

How many a night for you, with no dawn,
How many nights for you with no morning
have I spent awake, weeping, without aid!
Have I spent awake weeping without respite,

Tears and sleeplessness—and what eye
Tears and wakefulness, and which onlooker
can endure both tear ducts' flow and sleeplessness?
Remains over the tearful, sleepless ones?

My anguish for that glimpse of promise! If only
My craving for a glimpse of your charm, if only
it had lasted until you attained sound judgment.
It lasted until you attained your aim,

I did not know, when I feared for you,
you from the evil eye, that Death lay in ambush.
The evil eye, that the fates with malice

Time took me unawares through you, from a quarter I did not
Would ambush me, from where I know not,
know, by stealth—and Time is like a lion.
And fate is like a lion in its pit.

Were it not for fear of shame, I would have exchanged
If it weren’t for fear of shame, I would have screamed
composure for a frenzy that engulfs fortitude.
With wise restraint that would rip at the flesh,

But my noble soul refused
notch the edge of consolation with grief.
To stain the extent of grief with suppressed rage.

So let my heart weep for you, for the eye does not
So let my heart weep for you, for the eye cannot
reach, through tears, the inward heart's rank.
Reach, with tears, the realm of eternity.

If the delusion of loss comes over you,
painful wasting has ravaged my body.
Then the painful delusion comes over my body.

From me to you, greetings of farewell - no
one who hates, but the farewell of one oppressed.
Words, but the farewell of the anguished one.
