لَوَىhe turned جِيدَهُhis neck وَانْصَرَفْand went away
فَمَاso what ضَرَّهُharmed him لَوْif عَطَفْhe turned back
He turned his neck and went away.
What harm would it have done him to turn back?

A gazelle whose glance
Helped infatuation overpower me.
تَبَسَّمَhe smiled عَنْrevealing لُؤْلُؤٍpearls
لَهُfor them مِنْof عَقِيقٍagate صَدَفْa shell

He smiled, revealing pearls
Whose shell was made of agate.

وَشَأْنُand the way of الْجَمَالِbeauty الصَّلَفْarrogance
And acted haughtily, not looking back;
And arrogance is beauty's way.
جَرَىflowed الْبَنْدُthe sash فِيat خَصْرِهِhis waist
عَلَىwith حَرَكَاتِthe movements of الْهَيَفْslenderness
The sash swayed at his waist
With the movements of his slender form.
وَمَاand not ذَاكَthat خَالٌa mole بَدَاappeared
وَلَكِنْbut وِسَامُa badge of التَّرَفْluxury
And what appeared was not a mole,
But a badge of luxury.

He saw me infatuated with him,
So he reproached me and turned away.
وَلَمْand did not يَدْرِknow أَنِّيthat I بِهِbecause of him
عَلَىupon جَمَراتِthe embers of التَّلَفْruin
And did not know that, because of him, I was
Upon the embers of ruin.
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُto him سَيِّدِيmy master
تَرَفَّقْbe gentle بِصَبٍّwith a lover دَنِفْailing
So I said to him, "My master,
Be gentle with a lover wasting away."
فَقَالso he said أَخَافُI fear الْعِدَاthe enemies
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُto him لاdo not تَخَفْfear
He said, "I fear the enemies."
So I told him, "Do not fear,
فَإِنِّنيfor I am عَفِيفُchaste الْهَوَىlove
وَمَاand not كُلُّevery صَبٍّlover يَعِفْis chaste
For I am chaste in love,
And not every lover is chaste."
وَأَنْشَدْتُهُand I recited to him قِطْعَةًa short poem
وَشِعْرِيَand my poetry إِحْدَىone of الطُّرَفْthe rare delights
And I recited a short poem to him—
And my verse is a rare delight.
فَأَصْغَىso he listened لَهَاto it بَاسِماًsmiling
وَبَانَand became apparent عَلَيْهِon him الأَسَفْregret
So he listened to it, smiling,
And his regret became plain.
وَنَمَّتْand betrayed بِهِhim خَجْلَةٌembarrassment
تَدُلُّpoints عَلَىto مَاwhat اقْتَرَفْhe had committed
And his embarrassment betrayed him,
Revealing what he had done.
وَقَالand he said أَهَذَاis this الضَّنَىwasting sickness
جَنَاهُhas brought it عَلَيْكَupon you الشَّغَفْpassion
And he said, "Is this wasting sickness
What passion has brought upon you?"
فَقُلْتُso I said نَعَمْyes سَيِّدِيmy master
وَأَبْرَحُand more grievous مِمَّاthan what أَصِفْI describe
So I said, "Yes, my master,
And it is worse than I describe."
فَصَدَّقَso he believed لَكِنّهُbut he
تَجَاهَلَfeigned ignorance لَمَّاwhen عَرَفْhe knew
So he believed me, but
Feigned ignorance once he knew.
وَقَالَand he said أَطَعْتَyou obeyed الْمُنَىwishes
وَبَعْضُand some الأَمَانِيwishes سَرَفْexcess
And said, "You have obeyed your wishes,
And some wishes are excessive.
وَمَاand not كُلُّevery ذِيone with حَاجَةٍa need
يَفُوزُattains بِهَاit إِنْeven if عَكَفْhe persists
And not everyone with a need
Attains it, even if he persists."
فَأَشْفَقْتُso I grew fearful مِنْat قَوْلِهِhis words
وَلَكِنَّbut رَبِّيmy Lord لَطَفْwas gracious
So I grew fearful at his words,
But my Lord was gracious.
فَلَمَّاthen when رَأَىhe saw أَدْمُعِيmy tears

Then, when he saw my tears
Flowing in succession, while my heart trembled,
تَبَسَّمَhe smiled لِيat me ضَاحِكَاًlaughing
وَمَانَعَand resisted ثُمَّthen انْعَطَفْrelented
He smiled at me, laughing,
And held back, then relented.
فَأَغْرَمْتُهُso I fined him قُبْلَةًa kiss
عَفَاmay pardon اللَّهُGod عَمَّاwhat سَلَفْhas passed
So I exacted a kiss from him—
May God pardon what is past.
